Game Heroes of Might and Magic 1 was released in 1995, five years after King's Bounty release. Game supports 256 colors and runs under 640x480 resolution.
It actually determined how next games in these series will look leaving it's fingerprints on each following version.
It was build on a same base as KB, but offered several new features:
Game was changed from role-playing to pure strategy genre. Quite interesting fact is that now Might and Magic games turn back to RPG genre.
Several heroes can be controlled by each player.
Creatures can be recruited mainly in castles growing each week.
Several maps can be played while each scenario contains only one map.
Spells have unique mana cost.
No "leadership" concept. Now hero can lead unlimited number of troops.
Computer plays exactly by the same rules as a human player conquering castles and controlling it's heroes.
Quest concept was removed just to return in next games with an improved and more challenging tasks.
Wandering creatures no longer pursue your hero in order to avoid possibility to remove them from the path they guard without fight.

Eight heroes can be supported by each player.
Single scenario and campaign concepts will for sure stay with us in next Heroes games.
Multi player scenario game available.
Each town type can build fixed types of buildings. In Heroes IV each town will look more unique providing choise which buildings to build.
Seven types of resources: gold, wood, ore, crystal, mercury, gems, sulfur.
Map is watched from above. Actually till HoMM IV maps looked the same throughout Heroes games except for buildings and terrain look.
Rivers are not obstacles and can be placed only as a decoration.
Magic spells have five levels. To gain access to high level spell mage guild has to upgraded accordingly.
Each hero has four primary skills: attack skill, defence skill, spell power and knowledge.
Several creatures can be upgraded.
