Elias Frederich EHRET was born on Aug 15, 1808 in Illingen, Wurttemberg, Germany. He was buried in Aug 1876 in Olive Cemetery, Olive Township, Elkhart Co., Indiana. He died on Aug 24, 1876 in his farm house, Elkhart, Elkhart County, Indiana. Mormon records indicate that Elias was born in 1778 in Germany. and thathe died August 24, 1878, in Wakarusa, Indiana.

Notes, written by Mrs. Ruby Nusbaum and placed in the family bible, indicate that he came to this country aboard the steamship, "Recovery,"departing from Amsterdam. The baggage list was dated July 26, 1819, andprovides the following information about Elias' family. Elias' parentswere both 40 years old at the time, and brought with them their sixchildren, plus their bedding and a chest.

It was the custom that boys were hired out by the steamship companies fora certain length of time to pay for their fare across the sea. Theybecame indentured servants. The older, stronger children and young adultsoften served a longer indenture to compensate for their older parents orsmaller children. Many families, well able to pay their passageindentured themselves in order to have a more gradual introduction intothe country using the time to acquaint themselves with the ways andlanguage. There were many abuses of this system.

Elias was so small that no none wanted to take him. One farer finallyagreed to take him saying that he could mind the children. Elias wasindentured for two years.

They lived in the neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. During thistime, Elias attended school. It is said that the farmer was mean to himand didn't want him to have a good lunch, but the "kind woman", byprearrangement with Elias, hid the lunch in a straw stack and he wouldget it there and go on to school. Even then, sometimes she couldn'tmanage and he would find no lunch.

Elias it seemed loved fun as well as any boy and one time a sheep mancame by to spend the night. Eliasfound out soon enough about a cross buck(angry sheep), so he would shake his cap at the end of the stiff tongueof a wagon. Then, when the buck ran after the hat, Elias scooted for thewagon box. Thus bit went until finally the buck ran into the tongue andkilled himself. Elias quickly ran to the house and brought the sheep manout to see what was wrong. Apparently the man thought it had been anaccident.

During a storm, the farmer instructed Elias to hook the hinge door to thebarn. Elias was too little even when he was standing on a bushel basket. He was unable to handle the door and was blown off. Te farmer angrilyclimbed on the basket and attempted to fix the door himself. A gust ofwind caught the door, knocking it completely off and the farmer to theground, with the door on top of him. The farmer sustained injuries fromwhich he never recovered. It is presumed that soon after this man's deaththat Elias went to Philadelphia where for several years he worked as anapprentice shoe cobbler. (Age 14) Although it was never said, there iscertainly the possibility thatElias apprenticed under his father who wasalso a cobbler.

During his apprentice Cholera broke out and there were so many deathsthat Elias became worried whereupon he inquired of a Doctor as toprecautionary measures. The Doctor told him to go back to work at histrade, but if he liked Port wine to take a little now and then, and hedidn't believe he would get the Cholera. Being a real German and broughtup on wine, he sipped as instructed until the Cholera outbreak was over.He always said, "I used up all of my $ 300.00 savings but, Ha! Ha!, Ididn't get the Cholera."

After he and Sophia were married, Elias started his own shoe shop untilthe Panic of 1837. When the Panic hit, all Elias could save was a team ofoxen, wagon and a few shoemaking tools. He and Sophia left Philadelphiain this wagon and traveled to the area of Wooster, Ohio. The history ofElkhart County, (Elkhart County History, , page 1106, Published inChicago, Ill. by Charles Chapman & Co., 1881) erroneously states thatElias and Sophia moved to Ohio in 1835, however the same book states thattheir son, Jacob, was born in Philadelphia in 1836. It is said that Eliasarrived in Ohio with but two dollars in his pocket.

The panic mention actually began in 1832 when the 2nd Bank of UnitedStates, filed a petition before the U.S. Senate to renew its charterwhich would expire in 1836. President Jackson opposed renewal and vetoedthe bill. He ordered Taney to remove public monies and transfer them toother select banks. A period of credit and inflation followed leading tothe panic of 1837 and the depression of 1837-1843.

Jacob Ehret, Elias and Sophia's son, told that in Ohio, Elias started ashoe shop in his house and then attended the Mennonite Church. Sophiadidn't like this church. The Ehrets being too "high toned", they wereGerman Baptists in Philadelphia, so when Elias went in his hgih hat andswallow tail coat she called him "Stutsy" (Proud Ehret). Sophia madeplain clothes, etc. and Elias told her that they must keep like thesepeople for these people were his shoe customers. In Ohio they lived inMedina County. They probably lived in Ohio from 1837 to about 1840.

No one seems to know when the family moved to Indiana, but they firstsettled on a section of land two miles cattcornered from the Shriverhouse. The prevoiusly mentioned 1881 History of Elkhart, Indiana, statesthat they moved to Elkhart County in the year 1840. They purchased theland for $ 1.25 per acre.

On May 28, 1856, Elias purchased the farm that in 1963 was owned byLeonard Eby. The purchase was recorded on December 18, 1856 and is record20, pages 500 and 501. The farm nis located one mile west of Wakarusa, and two and a quarter miles north on the east side of the road, or justnorth of the Ehret's School and the Baugo Church.
