Johann Michael Moll (MULL) was born about 1710 in Goshenhoppen, Pennsylvania. In 1660, the great Puritan experiment in England came to an end with thereturn of the "Merry Monarch," Stuart King Charles II to the throne.During the next twenty years, the crown granted a number of favors forservices rendered. New Titles were given and grants of land were made tofavorites of the king, among them the family of Admiral Penn.

William Penn, the admiral's son, was given a great tract of land in thecentral colonies of America.Penn and a number of settlers arrived in 1682to inspect this land. His ship sailed up the Deleware estuary, and aftermaking several landfalls and visits to the existing Swedish colonies, hecontinued up the river until he came to a green tongue of land betweenthe confluence of the Schuykill and Delaware Rivers and there cameashore. He laid out a "Green County Town" on this terrain and called itPhiladelphia. Idealistically, he made a treaty with the Lenni LenapeIndians who inhabited the territory and peacefully arrived at anagreement whereby he could own, and Europeans could occupy the environs.A John Moll appears on one of the committees of the first state assemblyheld at Chester, Pennsylvania on December 4, 1682. This John Moll was thefirst recorded Moll in Pennsylvania. The exact connection of this JohnMoll to Johann Michael Moll is uncertain.

Less than 50 years after its founding, Philadelphia was growing rapidlyand ships were arriving from Europe carrying passengers and merchandise.A constant flow of immigrants resulted in Pennsylvania becoming thesecond most populous province in colonial America and the city ofPhiladelphia becoming the second largest city in the British Empire -second only to London. On one ship, the "Pensilvania Merchant," whicharrived in Philadelphia on September 10, 1731, came Johan Michael Moll(1689-12 Feb 1770) from Weisenheim am Sand, Germany. John Stedman was theCommander, sailing from Rotterdam.

Other passangers on the Pensilvania Merchant in 1731 included ChristophelMoll, Margarite Moll, Conrad Moll and Rosina Moll. The exact relationshipof these persons to one another is uncertain.

Johan Michael Moll's younger brother, Johann Peter Moll, had arrived inPhiladelphia on August 10, 1729, aboard the "Mortonhouse;" James Coulterwas master of this ship, sailing from Cowes, England June 21st, 1729.

During this period, the vast majority of ships arriving in Philadelphiawere German passengers who sailed from Rotterdam. Ships from thecontinent bound for England's North American colonies at this time wererequired to visit an English port to register their cargo before crossingthe Atlantic. The Pensilvania Merchant on this voyage stopped at Dover.Passage between England and Phildelphia ranged from a minimum of 58 daysto a maximum of 89 days, and probably averaged about 75 days.

Johann Micahel Moll emigrated to this country aboard the ship PENSILVANIAMERCHANT with several other families and settled north of Philadelphiafirst in Germantown, and later he moved to a German community near thePerkiomen Creek. Here his name appears in the new Goshenhoppen Church, which included the Old Goshenhoppen charge. In these records five othermen, presumably heads of families, who came over on the same ship, wereconnected with this church: namely, Abraham Sahler ( 1732), Johann BatelGucker (1732), Johann Michael Moll (1736), Christophel Moll (1733), andHans Adam Echelen (1732). The dates refer to the year the name appears inthe church book.

The crossing of the PENSILVANIA MERCANT from Rotterdam, took place in1731, with Captain John Stedman at the healm. The trip included a stop atDover, England, arriving in Philadelphia 10 September 1731. There were 57Palatines aboard - 175 men women and children. Most of them were from theBavarian Palitinate or Wurtemburg.

Many of the the passengers were from Freisenheim, but Johann Michael gavehis town of residence as Weisenheim am Sand, Bayern-Pfalz. He gave hisage as 33 and the young woman accompanying him was Rosina, and Hiob 1.There was also a Christoffel Moll on board accompanied by Anylas Moll;Conrad Moll, and Margarite Moll.

All of the Molls indicated they were headed for Montgomery County,Pennsylvania.

l settled in East Greenville (Goshenhoppen) in 1732. Over 80% of familiesnamed Moll may be found in the four county - Lehigh, Berks, Montgomery, and Bucks - area today.
