3rd March 2001

. City have climbed to 4th in the Nationwide Conference tonight after a 3-1 victory over Hayes at Church Road.

In a fairly un-entertaining game the blues took the lead seven minutes before half time when striker Mark Beesley nodded the ball in at the far post.

Hayes equalised soon after the break when veteran striker Jimmy Quinn looped a header over advancing keeper Priestley who again had a good game.

City weren't kept on level terms for long though as Mark Beesley scored his second from the penalty spot to give the blues back the advantage after being rugby tackled to the floor by Hayes keeper Gothard. He was sent off for his actions and was booed and jeered off the pitch by the home fans and as entering the players tunnel came close to thumping one of them!

Hayes began to fall to pieces after the sending off and City soon where 3-1 up when Mattie Woods converted another penalty after he was brought down in the box by the substitute keeper who was lucky not to be sent off himself.

City cruised to the final whistle and could and perhaps should have won by 4-5 as Hayes gave up but three points is three points and it certainly bolsters City's chances of a top three finish.
