HowTo
add a hidden hit counter in FrontPage 2000
by Edna
Step 1. Create a 1 pixel by 1 pixel transparent gif in whatever graphics program you have,
and save it in the images folder of your web. Tip: Use the Zoom feature.
You can create one with Image
Composer but the smallest I could achieve with it was 2 x 2 pixels,
This seems to work just as well. Make sure you save it as soon as
you create it and it's still in a selection box. An even easier method is to just steal
ours.
Place your mouse in the space between the + signs until it turns into a
pointer, then right-click and choose Save Picture As, to steal mine. +
+ You will find many other uses for this handy little graphic.
Save this graphic to your web in the top
level folder. Next if you have some of your page files organized in
folders and you want hidden counters on these pages, copy the graphic to
each of the these. Just right click the transparent gif and select copy,
then select each folder in turn, right click and paste it.
[Note: Although it should work if you place it in your images or
graphics folder and then enter the correct path in the Hit Counter
dialog box, in practice this often causes problems.]
Step 2. Click your mouse on your page to move the cursor to where you
want your counter to go. (Usually at the bottom of the page and out of
the way) On the Insert menu, point to Component, and click
Hit Counter.
In the Hit Counter Properties dialog box, click Custom Picture.
Type in the file name for your transparent gif. FrontPage will display the words Hit Counter in Normal view but not on
your published web page.
Step 3. Click OK, and save the page.
Step 4. When you want to find out how many visitors you've had, just go to the Tools menu
in FrontPage and click Web Settings then the Advanced tab. Select the
Show documents in hidden directories check box and then click Apply.
Step 5. Open the _private folder in Folders view and right-click the .cnt file for the page the hit counter is on. Choose Open With Text Editor (notepad.exe). Voila! There's your stats on a notepad file.
