wild, untamed platypus tour

back | next

Platypus are solitary animals, but they often share territories. The platypus is naturally shy, mainly nocturnal and not often spotted during the day. If he is disturbed, he will "splash dive," scaring off predators. Because of this, and his nocturnal lifestyle, not much is known about the platypus. Research is currently being done by the Australian Platypus Conservancy. Despite the fact that the platypus is of major scientific interest and significance, much remains to be discovered about his basic biology and ecology.

The platypus is not an endangered species, but is classified as "Common but potentially Vulnerable." Pollution does affect these animals in inner city creeks and streams, where numbers have dropped. If environmental damage continues, platypus populations will become unstable.
