Ron Wilson V Jimmy Carruthers

October 13th 1950, West Melbourne Stadium

THE BILLING

Jimmy Carruthers

Bantamweight Champion of the World

ANOTHER PROSPECT?

Jimmy Carruthers (McConnell) beat Ron Wilson (Ivory) on a tko, in the 5th round. Wilson had to retire due to two severe cuts above both eyes. The bout was Interesting with Carruthers, a southpaw, forcing In with good direct and purposeful punching.

He made use of his weight and kept at Wilson with his heavier punching and smart moving. Carruthers has a good punch In either hand and Is speedy on the feet.

Wilson looked to be half a stone lighter than his man and moved well to get out of trouble then come back with good right hand shots that made his man move quickly and the fight was developing with the Sydney boy a move ahead of his man.

It was bad luck for Ron to suffer these Injuries, he was giving a good account of himself against a boy who looks a coming champion in the featherweight division.

He has good shoulder muscles and can develop a punch with these attributes, the way he follows his right hand lead with a fast left and right hand punching with a nice balance Is something that will carry him to the top of the ladder.

SYDNEY DOUBLE

AT STADIUM

By JACK OATES

TWO fighting boxers, Jim Carruthers (8.9)
and George Barnes (9.11
1/4)
won the double bill bouts
at the stadium last night.

Carruthers defeated Ron Wilson (8-41/4) on a t.k.o.. in the fith round, and Barnes easily beat Kev. Brown (9-121/4) on points.

Southpaw Carruthers. Who was having only his second professional fight, gave a most promising display, and he should be in line for bantamweight honors in another few months.

Carruthers (red corner) had too great a reach for Wilson, who had a cut over the left eye in the third round.

Wilson landed solidly with both hands a few times, but Carruthers was always the stronger

When Wilson also received a cut over his right eye in the fifth round, Referee Terry Reilly stopped the bout.

In any case, Wilson was outclassed and well behind on points.

Barnes (red corner) got tired punching the game Brown in the other 12-rounder.

Brown was a “glutton” for punishment, and it was amazing how he was able to see out the distance.

Barnes, who should develop into a lightweight of class, caught Brown throughout with every punch in the book-both hands to the body, many left hooks and a few solid rights.

However, Brown still fought on and even when he was out on his feet he flicked with lefts to Barnes’s face and occasionally lunged with body blows.

Brown’s grit was commendable from beginning to end. He was dropped for the count of eight with a solid left hook in the very first round.
