WELCOME to my home in Cyber Space. My name is Deborah and I live on Grand Manan Island

in the Bay of Fundy off the southern coast of New Brunswick, Canada.
I have lived here for the past 27 years but lived in various places before moving here to teach school in 1973. I spent my first twelve years on Grand Manan and moved to Maine at the age of 12, for two years. Then it was on to Fredericton for four years, Toronto for three years and back in Fredericton to attend Teachers College. I taught History and English for three years at Fredericton High School, then returned to university for one year before moving to Grand Manan.

I teach High School History, Geography and Canadian Law at Grand Manan High School. I am in my 30th and last year of teaching and, although I love working with teenagers, I am getting very tired and am looking forward to retirement with great anticipation.

I met my husband Doug in 1973, and when we married I inherited seven step-children and two grandchildren. Those numbers have now swelled to eighteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Doug and I have one daughter, Sybil.

We lived in North Head and at the South West Head Light Station for a number of years, then, in 1984 bought our present home in the small fishing village of Seal Cove, the southernmost village on the island. Our home is in the neighbourhood where we grew up - next door to Doug's ancestral home, next door to my grandparents' home, and across the street from the house I lived in until the age of 12. Doug always said that it was fate that we should come back home. .

I decided in 1999 that it was time to go on with my life and made a major move at the end of August that year. After twenty-six years on Grand Manan, I moved to Fredericton, where I studied Italian at St. Thomas University, and started a jam and jelly business with my sister and a friend. My sisters, friends and I travelled to Italy, Germany and Switzerland in April and had a wonderful trip. Several of us are hoping to be able to spend our winters in Tuscany after retirement. Hopefully, that will be more than just a dream.

I moved back to Grand Manan in July 2000 to teach again in the fall. That winter we decided that we just could not wait to see Italy again, so, my sisters Sarah and Nancy, and a friend, Kathy, and I spent March break in Florence and Rome.

I retired in June 2001 and have been busier than ever. In addition to trying to work on some of the projects that I have been putting off for many year until my retirement, I have a beautiful new granddaughter with whom I seem to spend a great deal of time.

This summer six of us are going to be travelling to Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Lake Como in northern Italy. This will be an exciting trip and we are having a great time planning the trip.

I have many interests, the most important of which are Genealogy, knitting and quilting, cooking and travelling. This is my first attempt at a home page and I hope you will check out my links. Bear with me, please. I will be working on these pages for awhile yet before they are completed.
