My Opinion Page

Do you ever just sit around and think about things? I do all the time. Most often when I just start thinking about things I think about how horrible the world really is. Do you realize we live in a society where 10 year olds will kill each other for a bicycle? And do you realize that you might die tomorrow because someone you work with or go to school with gets tired of living and decides to take 10 people along with him/her into the grave? How can our world be this way? How can we have stopped caring so much? Has the value of human life decreased so much that we can kill each other without a second thought? When you hear about a murder on television, do you think " Oh my, what a tragedy" and actually be sad about it, or do you think" Oh look, another one", and feel no remorse at all. Sure, you can say "But I didn't even know them" Does it really matter? It's still another life flushed down the tubes because someone has gets angry, or upset and so they kill someone. And of course, we all think 'Well, there's nothing I can do about it." Sure there is. Love everyone. I'm not talking about wild passionate love, I mean the kind that you have for your best friend. Is it really so hard to love someone? No, it's not hard at all. Love is an emotion that comes so naturally to everyone, that you can't help just giving it away. It's not going to hurt you to give away love, it's not like you run out of it. So just try to love everyone. Say hello to people you normally wouldn't, or smile a kind smile at a stranger. It might not seem like a lot to you, but it could mean the world to someone that thinks they have nothing to live for.

I want to know what kind of world we live in when rapists and child molesters can be sentenced to only three years in prison, and then they get out in one and a half. I don't think this is nearly enough. I think they should rot in jail; for the rest of their lives. Why let them out when they will just do it again? There is no sentence large enough to take away the pain they cause, to take away the hell it puts us in. The victim will have to bear the scars for a lifetime. They can ruin a life by what they do, and all they get is a year and a half? They hold captive a child"s youth, they take the innocence away from children, they steal the purity away from girls and women. And yet, all they get is one lousy year and a half in jail? And half of the abusers, no, wait, more than half of the abusers out there don't even get punished. I know of so many people, including myself, that things have happened to. If I can know of so many, and they are all my friends, think about how many people this is actually happening to. Is it happening to your children? To your best friend? I pray to God it's not. Even though I will sit here and harp about all the horible things that happen out there, there is one thing that I do believe. If it doesn't kill you, it makes you stronger. It didn't kill me, it has made me stronger. I will not sit here and whine and go "Oh, poor pitiful me" because there is nothing that I can do to change my past. I can't just snap and it will be gone. It will always be there, following me, stalking me, haunting my dreams. I will become a better person, a stronger person. He will not ruin my life and make me weak. I will rise above and I will win.

*Note, I did not write this next thing. It was passed on to me by ways of e-mail. I loved it so much, that I thought I had no other choice but to include it on my page.

We Reap What We Sow

Let's see, I think it started when Madeline Murray O'Hare complained she didn't want any prayer in our schools, and we said OK... Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school, the Bible that says thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself. And we said, OK... Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when they misbehave because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem. And we said, an expert should know what he's talking about so we won't spank them anymore... Then someone said teachers and principals better not discipline our children when they misbehave. And the school administrators said no faculty member in this school better touch a student when they misbehave because we don't want any bad publicity, and we surely don't want to be sued. And we accepted their reasoning... Then someone said, let's let our daughters have abortions if they want, and they won't even have to tell their parents. And we said, that's a grand idea... Then some wise school board member said, since boys will be boys and they're going to do it anyway, let's give our sons all the condoms they want, so they can have all the fun they desire, and we won't have to tell their parents they got them at school. And we said, that's another great idea... Then some of our top elected officials said it doesn't matter what we do in private as long as we do our jobs. And agreeing with them, we said it doesn't matter to me what anyone, including the President, does in private as long as I have a job and the economy is good... And then someone said let's print magazines with pictures of nude women and call it wholesome down-to-earth appreciation for the beauty of the female body. And we said we have no problem with that... And someone else took that appreciation a step further and published pictures of nude children and then stepped further still by making them available on the internet. And we said they're entitled to their free speech... And the entertainment industry said, let's make TV shows and movies that promote profanity, violence, and illicit sex. And let's record music that encourages rape, drugs, murder, suicide, and satanic themes... And we said it's just entertainment, it has no adverse effect, and nobody takes it seriously anyway, so go right ahead... Therefore, now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves... Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do with... "we reap what we sow."
