1984~ Geraldine Ferraro is the first woman vice-presidential candidate of a major political party (Democratic Party). She finished high school at the age of 16, and won a college scholarship. She taught at New York Public Schools for five years, while attending law school at night. She was first elected into Congress in 1978 and served three terms in the House of Representatives. She stood up for efforts to achieve passage of the Equal Rights Amendment. She also sponsored the Economic Equality Act in 1984. She ran in the 1984 Presidential election with Walter Mondale but was defeated by Ronald Reagan and George Bush.
