~Women's Rights Timeline~

1968 Shirley Chisholm (D-NY) is first Black woman elected to the US Congress. During her first term in congress, she spoke out for women’s rights, civil rights, the poor, and against the Vietnam War. She also hired an all-female staff to help her with these issues and campaigns. Chisholm ended up running for president in 1972. She said that she had always felt more discrimination as a woman than as a black person.
