One-Eye

RELATIONS:
Lifemate of Clearbrook; father of unnamed daughter and Scouter; brother of Longbranch; uncle of Nightfall; grandfather of Pool

SOUL NAME:
Sur

BIO:
One-Eye, born during the reign of Bearclaw, lived to almost 500 years of age. He was one of the elder Wolfriders, along with his recognized lifemate Clearbrook. Strong, courageous, and extremely loyal to his chief, One-Eye was fierce in battle, especially when his cub, Scouter or his lifemate, Clearbrook were endangered. He and Clearbrook had a daughter long before Scouter was born, but her name and cause of death is unknown.

First known as Woodhue, One-Eye gained his new name after he was captured by humans. Instead of killing him outright, the humans decided to toy with him, gouging out his right eye. When he broke free of his bonds and saw the chance to escape, One-Eye fled. It was his wolf-friend Nestrobber who found him andcarried his body back to the holt, where his brother Longbranch discovered him and sent for Rain the Healer. Rain was only able to heal the wound, not replace the eye he lost. One-Eye blamed himself for his being captured and tortured to which Bearclaw assured him that it wouldn't have stopped the humans from taking his eye (Figure 1). And so, Woodhue became One-Eye from that day on.

But even this did not stop his actions in preventing Strongbow from killing humans that stumbled upon Sorrow's End. He made it clear that they wait for Cutter (Figure 2, on right). Even though One-Eye still considered Cutter a cub, he never questioned Cutter's judgements; Cutter was chief and that was that.

One-Eye's initial death came about while in battle with Frozen Mountain trolls. After retrieving his cub Scouter (who had been choked unconscience) and carrying him off to safety, One-Eye engaged in battle with a troll. Successfully killing him, One-Eye's sword became stuck in the troll's bone. While he struggled to free it, another troll snuck up on his blind side, smashing a large mace into the side of his head, killing him almost instantly (Figure 3).

Clearbrook, after being helped by an injured Cutter in fending off oncoming trolls, immediately collapsed upon One-Eye's body, sending to him over and over again (Figure 4, below). When no response came, she realized the inevitable: her lifemate was dead. Filled with sadness and grief, she raised her long silver braid into the air and with a swift slice from her sword, chopped it off. Placing the braid, which One-Eye had braided for her so many times before, around his lifeless body, she yelled: "Oh, lifemate, friend of my body and spirit--I will always be with you!"

© WaRP GraphicsAfter the remaining Wolfriders were whisked away by the Go-Backs, the Preserver Petalwing sealed his body in wrapstuff, believing that Clearbrook's act was her attempt at making wrapstuff. Unknown at the time, this was done at the same moment his soul tried to leave his body, trapping him on the point of death, unable to make an end of it. Days later, deep in the troll caverns where his body had been carried, the healer Leetah sensed that body and soul were still together, and tried desperately to save him. The result was a "living death" -- she was able to give life back to the body, but One-Eye's spirit fled to the Palace.

It was not until three years later that Clearbrook returned to the Palace and made true peace with his passing, thus One-Eye's body was released to death.

Even in spirit, One-Eye helped the Wolfriders. When Strongbow killed Kureel, a Glider, for threatening to kill his cub Dart, the scars remained with him for years. Pain, grief, and guilt took their toll, eventually rendering him unfit to hunt or guard. To heal his wounds, Strongbow turned to the Palace of the High Ones... and One-Eye. Out of all the elves' spirits in the Palace, he asked One-Eye to find Kureel's spirit, so that he might make peace with him once and for all.

[It is suspected, at least by myself, that Strongbow's choice of One-Eye's spirit could be due to a close relationship these two elves shared, perhaps because of similar tragedies occurring in their lives. Almost the same age, both Strongbow and One-Eye suffered the loss of daughters early in their lives, and they both shared a deep hatred for humans as a result of mental and physical wounds inflicted upon them. These two factors could have been ample reason for Strongbow's choice of his fellow packmate and friend. -- LS]
One-Eye's spirit still dwells with all the other fallen Wolfriders and elves.
