The flollowing acts are prohibited according to Article VI of the competition Rules of the United States Taekwondo Union

SECTION 1: WARNINGS (KYONG GO – HALF POINT DEDUCTIONS

     The referee shall give warning to the competitor and impose a deduction of 0.5 points, when any one of the following violations is committed (warnings shall be counted by the grand total throughout the rounds). If a contestant receives any combination of the following warnings six times, he shall be declared the loser.

  • Holding the opponent.
  • Escaping from fighting by showing the back to the opponent.
  • Stepping out of the boundary line to escape fighting.
  • Attacking with the knees.
  • Throwing the opponent.
  • Pretending injury.
  • Stalling.
  • Attacking an unauthorized area.
  • Pushing the opponent with the shoulder, body, or hands
  • Intentional falling.
  • Attacking the opponent’s face or neck with the fist.
  • Uttering undesirable remarks or behaving in an unsportsmanlike manner by either the contestant or the coach.

SECTION 2: FULL POINT DEDUCTIONS

     The following prohibited acts when committed by the contestant shall be subject to a deduction of one point (the referee shall suspend the contestant momentarily to declare the deduction of points). Deduction of points shall be counted by the grand total throughout the round(s). When a contestant gets the deduction of points three times, the referee shall rule the competitor loser by disqualification, and shall declare the contestant’s opponent the winner.
  • Attacking a fallen opponent
  • Contact to the opponent’s face or neck with the fist.
  • Butting
  • Intentional attack after referee’s declaration “Kalyeo” (break) order.
  • Uttering violent and undesirable remarks, and misconduct on the part of the contestant or the coach
  • Intentionally going outside of the outer boundary (12m x 12m).

SECTION 3: DISQUALIFICATIONS
  • Injuring the opponent’s face or neck by fist attack.
  • Injuring the opponent’s face or neck by malicious foot attack.
  • Injuring the opponent and/or rendering him unable to continue by using unauthorized attacking implement (butting, kneeing, biting, gouging, etc.).
  • Intentionally attacking unauthorized areas and injuring the opponent.
  • Unsportsmanlike conduct.
  • Accumulation of three penalty points (defeated by penalty).

SECTION 4: DECISIONS

Determination of the winner shall be made by one of the following:
  • Disqualification of the opponent.
  • Withdrawal of the opponent.
  • Injury of the opponent.
  • Knock out.
  • Points
  • Deduciton of points
  • Superiority
  • Referee stops contest (R.S.C.).

SECTION 6: THE RULES OF SUPERIORITY

     In the event of a tie score, determination of the winner must be made by the rules of superiority. The most effective legal scoring attack by each competitor is determined and the quality of the two techniques compared. The superior technique is determined by applying the rules of superiority in the order listed. The winner is the fighter with the superior technique.
  • Any technique (foot or hand) that is sufficiently powerful to result in an eight-count knock-down is superior to any other technique.
  • A foot technique is superior to a hand technique.
  • A jumping kick is superior to a standing kick.
  • A kick to the face is superior to a kick to the body.
  • A counterattack is superior to an initiative attack.
  • If there is still a tie, then the more aggressive fighter is superior to the defensive one.

SECTION 7: AUTHORIZED AREAS FOR SCORING OF POINTS
  • Facial area (Foot only): includes the entire face and neck from the top of the forehead, in front of the ears, down to the collarbone.
  • Body Area: includes the area covered by the chest protector from the collarbone to the navel in the front and to the “posterior axillary line” on the sides (i.e., to the imaginary line drawn down the side from the back crease of the armpit).
  • SECTION 8: POINT (VALID SCORES)

         One point shall be awarded for each of the following attacks if executed with proper balance, power, and technique. NOTE: To be scored as a point, a punch or kick to the body must be sufficiently powerful to produce a “trembling shock” (i.e., a significant impact) while the attacker maintains good balance and form; a kick to the head must e firm (but not vicious) while the attacker maintains good balance and form.
    • Foot Attack
      • To an authorized facial area.
      • To an authorized body area.
      • Anywhere to the body above the belt, excluding the back, top of head, and back of head, if the opponent is knocked down by the force of the attack
    • Hand Attack
      • To an authorized body areas.
      • Anywhere to the body above the belt, excluding the back, top of head, and back of head, if the opponent is knocked down by the force of the attack.
    • The Following Attacks will Not Be Scored
      • Holding the opponent or losing balance after an effective attack.
      • Continue attack while clinching.
