Somerset defeated Mayfield 34-31 to claim the championship in a wild finish.  Somerset led 28-17 early in the final quarter but Mayfield rallied to take a 31-28 lead with 6:56 left on the clock.  Mayfield failed on a fourth and six play and Somerset got the ball on their own 14 with 28 seconds remaining in the game.  Somerset drive appeared to end with a failed pass in the end zone in what appeared to be the last play of the game.  However pass interference was called and Somerset got an untimed play from the 20 yard line.  Kaiya Sheron then hit Tate Madden with a 20 yard touchdown strike to complete the improbable comeback.  Somerset finished the season at 14-1 despite losing their leading rusher Alex Miller midway through the season.  Somerset recorded 18 first downs and 312 yards of total offense.  The Briar Jumpers were penalized three times for 10 yards and lost two fumbles.  Mayfield recorded 20 first downs and 406 yards of total offense.  The Cardinals were penalized 10 times for 83 yards and lost a fumble.

Jase Bruner led Somerset’s ground game with 55 yards and a touchdown on six carries.  Kaiya Sheron carried the ball 11 times for 36 yards.  Mikey Garland recorded 22 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries.  Kaiya Sheron was named MVP and completed 10 of 15 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown.  Kade Grundy caught three passes for 52 yards.  Jayden Gilmore added three receptions for 24 yards.  Tate Madden caught two passes for 58 yards and a touchdown.  Kade Grundy punted twice for a 41.0 average and returned three kickoffs for 65 yards with a long return of 34 yards.  Chaz Gilmore led the defense with five solo and five assisted tackles.  Dylan Keith added three solo and five assisted tackles with one of his tackles resulting in a five yard loss.  Cale Todd recorded three solo and four assisted tackles.

Kylan Galbreath led Mayfield’s ground attack with 159 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries.  Jayden Stinson completed 15 of 17 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns.  Tate Puckett caught six passes for 95 yards and a touchdown.  Diaz Perry added five receptions for 121 yards and a touchdown.  Micah Haley punted once for 56 yards.  Ben Gloyd led the defense with six solo and two assisted tackles.  Derek Stewart recorded four solo and five assisted tackles.  Markeacio Jackson recorded five solo tackles with two of his tackles resulting in losses totaling 13 yards.  Alonzo Daniel and Gabe Spalding each recovered a fumble.

Pikeville stunned the crowd with a 43-0 victory over Paintsville to claim the championship and improve their record to 14-0 for the season.  Paintsville finished their season at 11-4.  The margin of the victory was the big surprise as Pikeville managed to grind out a 9-8 victory over the Tigers on September 6th at Pikeville.  Today was a different story as Pikeville’s Brody Birchfield scooped up a fumble and raced 25 yards to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead 16 seconds into the game.   Soph. QB Isaac McNamee, who was named MVP threw three touchdowns in the first half to stake Pikeville to a 28-0 halftime lead.  The light rain failed to dampen the spirits of the Pikeville fans as the 16 seniors received ovations as they left the field late in the game.

Pikeville recorded 20 first downs and 408 yards of total offense.  The Panthers were penalized 11 times for 108 yards and lost a fumble.  Paintsville recorded 10 first downs and 165 yards of total offense.  The Tigers were penalized 11 times for 83 yards and lost two fumbles.

Cody Raines led Pikeville’s ground game with 85 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.  Jackson Hensley carried the ball six times for 49 yards.  Jon Collum added 44 yards and a touchdown on seven carries.  Isaac McNamee completed 13 of 21 passes for 215 yards and three touchdowns.  Zac Lockhart caught four passes for 51 yards and a touchdown.  Clay Tinsley added three receptions for 66 yards.  Jackson Hensley recorded two receptions for 78 yards and two touchdowns.  Tanner Hamilton kicked off seven times for a 53.3 average with four touchbacks.  Peyton Boyd-Blair led the defense with four solo and one assisted tackles.  Kaden Caudill added three solo and three assisted tackles.  Jackson Hensley recorded four solo tackles.  Brody Birchfield added three solo and two assisted tackles and scored on a 25 yard fumble recovery return.  Connor Wright also recovered a fumble.

John Walker Phelps led Paintsville’s ground game with 97 yards on 15 carries.  Jake Hyden carried the ball 12 times for 30 yards.  Jake Hyden completed three of nine passes for 24 yards.  Karsten Poe caught two passes for 17 yards.  John Walker Phelps returned three kickoffs for 54 yards with a long return of 19 yards.  Jaylyn Allen led the defense with seven solo tackles.  Jake Hyden added five solo and two assisted tackles.  Luke Hyden recorded three solo and three assisted tackles.  Hunter Ousley recovered a fumble.
