Sayre coach Robert Goodman started the following lineup: 6-3 Sr. Jake Duby, 5-11 Jr. RJ Smith, 6-0 Sr. Will Newton, 5-7 Sr. Kaden Silverburg, and 5-11 Sr. Robbie Goodman. Madison Southern coach Shane Buttry countered with 6-2 Sr. Bryar Rose, 6-2 Sr. Michael Jefferson, 6-1 Sr. Noah Marshall, 5-9 Jr. Shawn Short, and 5-11 Sr. Caleb Miller.
Sayre defeated Madison Southern 56-48 tonight to notch their first region win since 1998. Robbie Goodman nailed a key three point basket with less than two minutes left to give Sayre a little breathing room. The score was tied eight times and there were eight lead changes in the game. Sayre shot 43.6% from the field including three of 12 from the three point line. Sayre attempted 15 less shots (54-39) from the field than Madison Southern. The Spartans connected on 19 of 22 free throws, pulled down 28 rebounds, and scored 22 points off 14 Madison Southern turnovers. Madison Southern shot 37% from the field including six of 29 from beyond the arc. The Eagles connected on two of six free throws, pulled down 32 rebounds, and scored eight points off 12 Sayre turnovers.
RJ Smith led Sayre with 16 points and four rebounds. Jake Duby added 15 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Robbie Goodman recorded eight points and Kaden Silverburg chipped in with seven points, six rebounds, and three assists. Will Newton added six points on six of six from the free throw line.
Caleb Miller led Madison Southern with 18 points including four three point baskets and three steals. Michael Jefferson added 11 points, 10 rebounds, and three assists. Bryar Rose recorded nine points and four rebounds.
