Eastern Illinois University coach Jay Spoonhour started the following lineup: 6-8 Sr. Josh Piper, 6-2 Jr. LeTrell Viser, 6-11 Jr. Luke Piotrowski, 5-7 Fr. Cornell Johnston, and 6-1 Sr. Dylan Chatman. Eastern Kentucky University coach Jeff Neubauer countered with 6-7 Sr. Timmy Knipp, 6-5 Jr. Denzel Richardson, 6-8 Sr. Eric Stutz, 6-2 Sr. Corey Walden, and 6-2 So. Isaac McGlone.
Eastern Illinois led by 15 points late in the first half but had to survive a late rally by Eastern Kentucky to earn a 72-65 victory. The Colonels actually cut the deficit to two points with two minutes left in the game. Eastern Illinois led 41-29 at halftime due to connecting on a sizzling 71.4% from the field before intermission.
Eastern Illinois shot 53.5% from the field including 11 of 19 from the three point line. The Panthers connected on 15 of 24 free throws, pulled down 32 rebounds, and scored 14 points off 11 Eastern Kentucky turnovers. They also held a 33-15 advantage in bench scoring. Eastern Kentucky shot 37.7% from the field including seven of 25 from beyond the arc. The Colonels connected on 18 of 23 free throws, pulled down 26 rebounds, and scored 14 points off 18 Eastern Illinois turnovers.
6-4 Jr. Trae Anderson led a balanced Panther scoring attack with 14 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Cornell Johnston added 10 points including two three point baskets and four assists. LeTrell Viser also scored 10 points including two three point baskets. Dylan Chatman chipped in with nine points on three three point baskets. 6-8 Jr. Chris Olivier recorded nine points and seven rebounds.
Corey Walden led Eastern Kentucky with 29 points including four three point baskets and four rebounds. 6-7 Jr. Ja’Mill Powell added 13 points including eight of nine free throws. Timmy Knipp chipped in with eight points and four rebounds.
