Scientifically:
Etmopterus spinax.
What To Look For:
This small shark is brown above with conspicuous
black markings on the underside and 2 dorsal fins
with spines. It is commom over the continental
slope at depths of between 70 and 2000 m. This is
also a lanternshark with light organs (photophores)
over the body.
Size:
Up to 60 cm.
Distribution:
Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean, between
Iceland and South Africa.
Food:
Small bony fish, squid and crabs.
Breeding:
Live-bearer, with litters of up to 20 pups.
Danger To Humans:
Not known to be dangerous.
