Tasselled Wobbegong
Scientifically:
Eucrossorhinus dasypogon.
What To Look For:
A large, squat shark recognised by fleshy tassels
fringing the head. It is grey to yellowish-brown
and highly patterned. The fins are wide, with the
dorsal ones set well back on the body. A solitary
fish, found in or near coral reefs, resting in
caves during the day and feeding at night.
Size:
Up to 3.6 m.
Distribution:
Northern Australia and Papua New Guinea.
Food:
Bottom-living invertebrates and fish, including
squirrelfish and soldierfish.
Breeding:
Probably live-bearer. Numbers not known.
Danger To Humans:
Possibly the most aggressive of the wobbegongs and
responsible for several unprovoked attacks. Recorded
to have attacked and killed local people in Papua
New Guinea.
