COON SUPPER - FRIDAY, JANUARY 18, 2019
Deer hunters in Williams, Fulton, and western Lucas Counties are asked to voluntarily submit the head from their deer harvested during Ohios hunting seasons to be tested for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD).
A free ranging white-tailed deer in Jackson County, Michigan tested positive for CWD in June 2018. This is approximately 30 to 40 miles from the Ohio border. As a result, the Ohio Division of Wildlife is conducting enhanced surveillance efforts in Williams, Fulton, and western Lucas Counties.
The goal will be to collect as many samples as possible from hunter harvested deer in these three counties during the 2018/2019 hunting seasons. Eleven collection stations have been established for hunters to submit their deer for testing throughout the three counties.
Each collection station has a self-serve kiosk and can be visited at any time. Instructions and supplies will be available to guide hunters on how to appropriately submit their deer. Submission includes cutting off the head of the deer, tagging it, and placing the head in a barrel. Hunters must use their own tools for removing the head of their deer from the carcass. Division of Wildlife personnel will pull tissue samples from the head and submit for testing. Hunters can submit their deer at the following locations:
Cleland's Outdoor World located at 10306 Airport Hwy., Swanton, OH 43558
Secor Metropark located at 10001 Central Ave., Sylvania, OH 43560
Fulton County Fairgrounds located at 8514 SR 108, Wauseon, OH 43567
Lyons Fire Dept. located at 409 W. Morenci St., Lyons, OH 43533
Maumee State Forest located at 3390 Co Rd. D, Swanton, OH 43558
Franklin Twp. Garage located at 10392 SR 66, Archbold, OH 43502
Pettisville Community Park located at 18405 Co. Rd. D-E, Pettisville, OH 43553
La Su An Wildlife Area located at 9455 Co Rd. R, Pioneer, OH 43554
Florence Twp. Garage located at 301 Railroad St., Edon, OH 43518
Pulaski Twp. Garage located at 6646 US 127, Bryan, OH 43506
Williams County Fairgrounds located at 619 E Main St., Montpelier, OH 43543
Only deer harvested from the three counties will be tested. Any deer from outside the designated area will not be accepted. Hunters will not be required to pay for testing. All testing expenses will be paid for by the Division of Wildlife.
Hunters must have their deer checked in and be able to provide the 18-digit confirmation number prior to submitting a deer for testing. Any ½ year old deer or those going to a taxidermist will not be tested.
The ODNR Division of Wildlife is working with local taxidermists and processors to collect samples.
At the time of submission, hunters will receive a 4-digit number to reference when checking testing results. Results will be available 8 to 10 weeks after submission. The testing results can be found at the wildohio.gov/CWD.
Questions on this effort can be directed to the ODNR Division of Wildlife District Two Headquarters at 419-424-5000.
