Jazz Pianist Derek Smith Solos Plays In-the-Round After Piano Spectacular |
Concert Friday evening, February 25, 2000 at 8pm |
Only half a dozen invitations were issued to the Piano Spectacular this year. This annual gathering of the top jazz pianists is extremely limited, so merely to be invited to play is quite an honor. At the end of the day though, Derek Smith's spirited playing had won over the audience, and converted a lot of fans to his brand of buoyant keyboard gymnastics.
On Friday evening, February 25, 2000, that same Derek Smith will play piano-in-the-round at the Watchung Arts Center. That intimate room is not considered as exclusive as the Piano Spectacular, but its sparkling acoustics and unobstructed sightlines make it a favorite piano room for players and listeners alike. Nobody is more than four rows away from the action. And tickets are only $10 for the 8 PM concert.
"Fiery." "Passionate." "An evil left hand." Those are just a few of the comments critics have made in print about pianist Derek Smith. His many fans don't have to read the reviews though. They know the sense of excitement he brings to a performance, and a solo job is his best showcase.
He may be the most recorded pianist in his field too, although he often plays anonymously. He's heard with such diverse company as the Modern Jazz Quartet, Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie and Burt Bacharach. His keyboard work has figured in three major movies, on the Tonight show with Doc Severinsen's orchestra, and in concert with such notables as Sinatra, Pavarotti, Steve Allen and Sammy Cahn. The Grammy nominee has been the leader on 20 albums and sideman on many more.
His driving style and innovative solos have kept him in demand for concerts and club dates. This is a pianist who injects such humor and enthusiasm into his playing that audiences need not be die-hard jazz fans to enjoy his work.
Given the intimacy of the room, reservations are strongly encouraged. They may be made by calling (908) 753-0190, leaving a message if necessary. Tickets will be held at the door.
