Bernice Lewis is one of the most brilliant voices in folk music today. Five years after her album, "Open Lines & Signals", she has another gem, "Isle of Spirit". She sings western swing, ballads, an amazing accapella of "When the Rivers Had No Names" giving you a musical tour with her evocative vocals. The quality of her lyrics is what most impresses her audiences. Bernice Lewis takes extra care in finding and creating humor and heartfelt compositions. She says of her songs, "each is a different well-thought-out message and each is a labor of love," In her tender evocations of the heart, in her explorations of the struggling soul, and in her tales highlighting the victories and defeats of everyday life, Bernice Lewis has more than earned her stellar reputation as a songwriter's songwriter.
A fixture on the coffeehouse circuit, contemporary-folk radio, and at major folk festivals, Lewis studied vocal improvisation with Bobby McFerrin, guitar technique with Alex DeGrassi and Guy van Duser, and songwriting with Roseanne Cash and Cris Williamson. She has been a featured performer on National Public Radio's Mountain Stage program and was a finalist in the New Folk Songwriting Contest at the prestigious Kerrville (Texas) Folk Festival.
Bernice tells stories through her lyrics, "Ways to Survive" is a heart-wrenching song about a Jewish woman in Poland around 1940. Her themes are intense and yet there is some upbeat, good natured fun in her material also. The listeners will be taken on a spiritual journey, sensual and moving. Her repertoire has some Native American flavor, sass and drama all in one concert.
This year the Watchung Arts Centers Folk Series has been able to bring in a wide variety of folk music. Bernice Lewis will finish of our November concerts with a concert youre sure to enjoy. Come hear her on Saturday, November 25th, 2001 at 8pm. The price is only $10 which includes light refreshments and an opportunity to view our on going art exhibits
