The Watchung Arts Center, known for presenting top notch professional entertainment, occasionally presents local talent. Laura Higgins of Warren is one of those special people. “The slower summer season enables us to present young entertainers and give them the opportunity to showcase their talents in a professional setting” stated Shelia Duyckinck, member of the Board of Directors. Laura is booked for Saturday, July 29, at 8pm. The nominal $10 ticket price includes a light refreshment served during intermission.
Trained as an actress, Laura Higgins put her theater career aside to pursue a future in music. Her music has been described as a unique mix of girlish innocence and womanly experience; the combination telling stories which reflect generations of laughter, hope and tears. Higgins challenges the nature of the ballad with concise lyrics and a rare sense of emotion which is as real as it is effective. This combined with a lighthearted and humorous stage presence make for an engaging performance that leaves people wanting more.
Her extensive performances in Massachusetts have met with critical approval – “At once both complex, cryptic and forthright, Laura’s music is refreshingly honest and touching. Her soul comes through and won’t be denied.” – Jeremy Goldstein WMFO; “With songs wise beyond her years and a voice that will knock you out of your seat, it won’t be long before “Laura Higgins” is a major player in the music scene.” – Matt Smith, Club Passim. January 2000 marked the debut of Higgins 1st CD, Symptomatic Grey. Ballads full of real emotion and intensity are matched with a gentle voice carrying Laura’s beautiful melodies. The intimate performance gallery at the Watchung Arts Center is an ideal setting for her show.
