Put that idling computer to use!

The world is full of diseases, conditions, and other things which affect millions of people world wide.  I'm sure most people know someone with some condition or sickness that currently can't be cured (Aids, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, Cancer).  Some people just sit around and turn up their toes and say the heck with it. Others organize themselves into activist groups to support people affected by these conditions. If you feel like helping out but don't have the time (or money) to actively participate just leave your computer running.

Stanford University hosts a "distributed computing" program called "Folding@Home" which uses your computer's idle time to help scientists research by processing data acquired by scientists in their quest to find cures to many ailing diseases and conditions.  Folding@home will not adversely affect your computer's performance nor get in the way of your games as it allows all other applications to finish their work before folding@home does anything.  The program is completly free. It's also free of spyware, viruses, trojans, or any other malicious scripts (it's endorsed by Stanford University).  Just download it, install it, and forget it.  A couple of times a week it will report it's findings and download more data to analyze.

For more information Short-media created a flash vid explaining the entire thing here

Visit Folding@Home's website for more info and the program its self

NOTE: If your planning on installing folding@home or any other sanctioned distributed computing program on a computer that you do not own be sure to get permission from the owner of the computer (best to get it in writing) before installing the program.
