Legislator Vehicle & Per Diem Report

The following is my report on the State Legislature's Legislator's Leased Car Program. I have also listed the salaries that each State Constitutional Officer receives, and daily per diem amount, which were all compiled through the State Legislature. After reading this report, seeing the government waste, and take into consideration the State Budget's $38 billion deficit, you'll understand why I am proposing such an expansive overhaul of the California State Constitution. It's outrageous and an affront to the People of California.

SALARIES & PER DIEM
The following is the amount of salary paid to the State Constitutional Officers as set by the California Citizens Compensation Commission (created under Prop 112, June 5, 1990, is:
Governor: $175,000
Lt. Governor: $131,250
Attorney General: $148,750
Superintendent of Public Instruction: $148,750
Controller: $140,000
Treasurer: $140,000
Insurance Commissioner: $140,000
Secretary of State: $131,250
Member, State Board of Equalization: $131,250
The breakdown in salary for the Members of the State Legislature are current as follows:
Assembly Speaker & Senate President Pro-Tempore: $113,850
Minority Floor (Party) Leader: $113,850
Majority Floor Leader: $106,425
2nd Ranking Minority Leader: $106,425
Remaining Members of the Legislature: $99,000.
*Note that the salaries were $52,500 for the rank and file Members of the Legislature until 1994. Salaries were $72,500 in 1998. All Statewide Constitutional Officers had their salaries increased on March 26, 1998. Statewide Officers, and Legislative Leaders alone have received salary increases since 1998, the last occuring on March 15, 2000. Salary increases are effective December of each increase year at the beginning of the new session. Legislator salaries have nearly doubled in nine years.
The average of the daily per diem, or TAX-FREE living expense allowance received by the Members of the California Legislature is about $26,500 annually. The current per diem rate received, as established by the State Board of Control is $125. The TAX-FREE per diem is received in addition to the current annual salary of $99,000.
