This is how an interview went with some Sex Workers
Why do you engage yourself in this sort
of trade?
We are poor and we need to live. Some of us
need money to continue our ambitions in life. Some of us were
trapped into this trade by friends and relatives and we can
not come out.
How were you trapped into this business?
We were trained by our mothers to take after
them when they are old and can not practice the business. Some
of us were introduced to it by friends and because of the monetary
gain we find ourselves trapped and as a matter of fact we can
not stop.
What is the age group in this trade?
Between 14years and 45 years.
What classes of people are engaged in
this trade?
Students, young adults,old ones.
How do you feel when you are called prostitutes?
What we are doing is a whole business and we
need a befitting name as sex workers than being called prostitutes.
Do you have fixed charges that has being
agreed upon by all the sex workers and a code of work?
We do not necessarily have a fixed fee but it
depends on a whole lot of things.
What are some of these things?
Your beauty and shape, how you are able to stay
longer with a client, the sort of skills for having sex you
put up, etc, are some of the things that determines the charges.
Are the young ones able to compete with
the older ones?
The younger ones are always in some sort of
conflict with the older ones since the younger ones are able
to take away their customers. The young ones are stronger, full
of energy and can stay longer.
Do you get a lot of money?
Yes, a lot of money come to our hands. Some
are able to pay in our local currency while others also pay
in foreign currency. Infact it depends also on whether you want
the sex to be RAW, that is without condoms, then you have to
pay more for that.
Do you think you are not putting yourselves
in danger of getting AIDS or STD's?
Every work has its disadvantages. We might get
but we need money to survive like you all. We also charge more
to see our Doctors.
Do you see Doctors?
Yes, we have our own Doctors we see to examine
us almost every time and day before we go for work to meet our
customers. That is why I said we charge more for our Doctors
examinations.
Anyway, do you use condoms?
Yes, sometimes when the customers demand it
to be use.
Are you going to do this work the whole
of your life time?
If along the line I get a job to do and it can
pay more than what I get at the moment,then I will consider
stopping.
Which people patronize your sex trade?
Students, married men, unmarried men, foriegners,
big men like prominent people in the society and as long as
you can pay us we are ready. We are in business.
