That was the last of the TOP GUN training session for season 03-04. It has proven to be a very valuable training tool for the ASC Coaching Staff and Swim Club producing far more experienced swimmers that in the past and has seen a lot of swimmers do very well already at WASA competition and Premierships.

As the ASC program continues to develop and climb the swimming ladder swimmers that graduate from the JNR Team continually develop and become the future of the program. Keep it up and hope to all of you and more back for more next season which commences on the 27th of April.

Can all swimmers please remain for the presentations until dismissed? It is only fair that swimmers who have received award are appreciated by all who attend,

LC TO SC CONVERSIONS

ASC Registrar asks WASA a few questions about using entry times for the State Championships. The questions and responses follow to help us all get clear.

The key points are you can convert, but DO NOT just enter an unconverted time onto the entry card as the qualifying time.

1) can a long course conversion be done if no sc qualifying time exists?

WASA Response: The quote, "Entry times should be short course times" just refers to the time placed on the entry card. This means that if the time is a converted time then it should be converted, not left as a long course time for us to convert. So, hopefully that answers question 1.

2) can a long course conversion be done even if there is a S/C qualifying time (assuming the L/C gives a faster time after conversion)?

WASA Response: To question 2, converted times are discouraged especially if the swimmer has a short course qualifying time, but they are allowed.

or

3) can only short course times be used with no converted times?

WASA Response: Then question 3, converted times can be used, (as above).

RELAY ENTRIES

A note to all parents that when entering a meet you do NOT enter relay events and also do NOT pay for relay events.

The Arena Swim Club selects the relay events we will participate in and pays for the relay entries.

ASC RACE SESSIONS/TIME TRIALS

This season we are going to do the ASC time trials differently (and better) than the last seasons.

This season they are a RACE SESSION that is set into the training plan.

This means for example if the RACE SESSION is on a Friday then swimmers from Inters, Devo's and Nat's are required to attend their training session that starts with the normal pre training landwork warm up at 4.20pm.

To complement this I could include the swimmers from the NDT or SAO's to attend this session time.

Apart from the NDT & SAO swimmers this would represent a normal PM training session for Inter's, Devo's and Nat's.

If other teams will attend the training session at 4.20 the coaching staff will inform them and the RACE SESSION entry form will also let you know who is to be where at what time.

Correspondingly I can set the session time for each team for many race situations.

For example sometimes swimmers will have to perform "dry" or in various situations that the coaching staff have planned for each team.

The aim of this is to provide for real life racing type experiences to our young swimmers.

What we do not want is swimmers to "show up for the time trial" because they would miss a training session that is geared towards racing education. I have instructed the coaching staff that I expect all swimmers to be punctual for their training sessions and the training sessions that incorporate a RACE SESSION are no different that any other training session.

Each swimmer is required to do their very best to attend their training session at the correct time.

Swimmers in the NDT and Nat teams will be able to team with their respective coach's in selecting a single event to race in on the night. That's right; NDT and Nat swimmers will only swim in 1 event.

As it is a training session the coaching staff will set performance levels they believe each swimmer should achieve in the NDT and Nat teams.

This will provide each of you with a challenge that is worthy of your talent and focus towards your swimming.

For example with NAT team swimmers I could set a level of performance of 95% of each swimmers PB in their event for the nights racing in front of their peers. This will show me who is able to compete at any time for themselves.

Swimmers of the Nat team and NDT will be expected to assist the ASC committee in the running of the RACE SESSION.

This means as it is a training session you will be required to stay to the end of the session.

The old idea of the time trial race n go is no longer relevant as it is a training RACE SESSION.

Parents, with the swimmers assisting we need your assistance in providing support and guidance so that we all are teaming together to gain the maximum benefit from the training RACE SESSION.

That's about it. You have just received the entry form for the first RACE SESSION for this season (I know I just sent it) so get them in before the closing time as we cannot enter any cards after the RACE SESSION entry's have closed, this is the first part of racing education, you cannot race if you have not entered.

It is the swimmers responsibility to ensure they have the entry card in the box on time. Otherwise they cannot complete their training session.

I think it will be very good for our swimmers as they will have an environment that is geared towards racing and learning.

Let's see how it all goes and get together for a frothy chop and natter afterwards.

Rod Bonsack

WATER BOTTLE POLICY

DRINK BOTTLES
(ALWAYS BRING A FULL DRINK BOTTLE TO TRAINING)

Hi there all,

With the responsibility of setting the standards here at the Arena Swim Club I am concerned towards a concept that was being practised in our training teams last season.

The "I do not need to drink during training concept" is not a standard that is taught by any of the coaching staff here at the Arena Swim Club.

Now the coaching staff wants the Arena Swim Club to be the best in Australia and we are mindful that it is a process that will require patience by all of us as we learn that the standards needed to be the best in Australia are high.

From Tuesday 3/6/03 swimmers in the Arena Swim Club Intermediate, Development, State Age / Open, National Development and National training teams will be excused from their training session if you do not have a full drink bottle at the start of your session. Your health can be affected by the lack of fluid intake, especially in higher intensity sets.

*** Swimmers take note. Once the coach has called the start of the training session your bottle is to be full. There will not be time to have you running off to fill your bottle, as the other swimmers will have to wait for you before they can start their session.

The idea is for you to have drunk all the fluid in the bottle during and after your session so that you can handle the intensity of each set without having your muscles paying you out. The coaching staff will assist you in this by giving you time to do take fluids in during the sessions.

If there are any ???? regarding the "I do not need to drink during training concept" please see me, I am more than happy to discuss with you the reasons it will not be used here at the Arena Swim Club.

Keep smiling,
Rod Bonsack

SWISS BALLS (NATS)

Those that train with Rod in Landwork will need to bring their Swiss Ball to each session.

The more you use them the more they benefit you and your swimming. Think about it, every time you use the Swiss Ball it promotes flexibility and inner core strength. Now a lot of programs use these balls to do just this. Just like us they are.

What I think is that if you use the ball in everyday life it will promote your abdominal and inner core strength way beyond your competitors. Now flexibility and inner core strength takes an enormous amount of time to gain. So the more you use the ball the more it benefits you.

I want you to use the ball at home. You don't have to exercise on it, just sit on it. Sit on it when you study, watch TV, eat at the brekkie bar (probably better not do it at the tea-table, bad manners if you fell off it), basically whenever you are sitting around.

Parents, keep an eye on this, the benefits will really improve the users posture and posture is the main reason for many injuries and more importantly body condition in adult life. That sore back, chances are it comes from posture.

So have a think about it, we have experimented on a landwork training circuit to see who of you is stronger and weaker at different moments at different exercises. One thing that consistently stands out, you need stronger abdominal strength and correct posture.

Use the ball, its good for you.

Keep :-)

ASC 03-04 INFO KIT
(Click on link to access info kit)

Hi all,

Here it is. Steps needed to be taken are -
1. Print off pages 1 to 10.
2. Tick the appropriate boxes and sign where required on the ASC membership form.
3. Parents, ensure the Medical form is accurately completed.
4. Swimmers, fill out the profile sheet with all your details.
5. Take pages 1 to 10 to the reception staff at Arena Joondalup for registering your membership with the ASC.
6. Print off page 27 and return to the reception staff at Arena Joondalup if you want to use the direct debit option from your credit card for the monthly team fees.

Save the ASC 0304 Info kit to your hard drive under "what a ripper of a competitive swimming club", then all is on hand for you during the season.

If you cannot open the attachment, click on the below web page address and follow the steps to download Acrobat Reader. This is free.
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/distribute.html?readstep

If you have difficulty, opening the attachment just bring in a floppy disk and I will put it on that for you.

For those you know not online I will provide pages 1 to 10 as hard copies, please let them know ASAP. The info kit will be on the ASC coach's board.

Bit of housekeeping:
It is illegal to park in the "no parking signed areas" at the front of the Arena. A number of potentially serious "near misses" have occurred with people walking behind / in front of parents waiting in their vehicles for their children. Please parents, I would appreciate it if everyone could utilise the designated car parks at all times.

ENTRY GATE

Hi all,

Swimmers, please refrain from pushing your way thru the gates to get to training. If you do not have your swipe card then just let the reception staff know and they will let you thru. If you have lost your swipe card just get a new one.

Cheers,

Rod Bonsack
Coaching Program Coordinator

ASC ENTRY CARDS

You will notice that there is a new "generic" meet entry form on the noticeboard. This is to try and make it easier for those of you unfamiliar with the system.

The "generic" cards (paper) are to be used for events which are not run by WASA. For all WASA entries please use the WASA cards (cardboard). WASA cards should not be used for events which are not WASA eg. Fremantle Port, Wanneroo Breakers etc. Pink is for girls and blue is for boys.

Some of you are still leaving the ID number blank on the card. It is made up of the first 3 letters of the swimmer's last name. The first 2 letters of the swimmer's first name and the date of birth. Eg. Kieran Perkins born on 14 August 1973 would have the ID number of PERKI140873.

2003-04 TEAM POSITIONS

Swimmers can secure their positions in the training teams of the ASC for season 03 04 by -
1. The level of performance each swimmer gains in their races. (Race time & event ranking)
2. Their potential for development. This is critical as boys and girls have different maturation rates of development.
3. The swimmers support of the training & competitive program.
4. The swimmers attitude to the training process of competitive swimming.
5. The level of attendance to their teams training program in consultation with the coaching staff.
6. The number of State times each swimmer has accumulated.

As I have written above these are the items the swimmers force us to judge them by. It is the swimmers who pick their team positions by their own efforts. If you have any questions please feel free to meet with me so that I can assist you.

Please refrain from asking the coaching staff while they are coaching a session as their time is valuable towards the task of preparing the swimmers.

Swimmers, the coaching staff wish you all the very best in your endeavours to place your name squarely in front of the ASC coaching staff so that you make your own position in your swim team.

Straight up, I want every swimmer of the competitive stream of the program to be in the team of their choice next season.

The team's criteria have been set. Now go and get it. Make it happen, aspire to your goals and give until you get what you want.

COACHES' OFFICE

Hi all,

Just a quick one to ask that the coach's office be left to us between 4.00 to 4.20PM so that we can organise ourselves for the upcoming training session. Swimmers, there is time for your questions when we are all on pooldeck.

When we have time to get the hand soccer balls from below the drains the game will be brought back out.

Cheers n thanx,
Rod Bonsack

CLUB POLICY MANUAL

Please ensure that you read the Club's new Policy Manual, for important information regarding relay team selection and discipline.

PARKING

Dear Arena Swim Club Parents,

It has been brought to our attention that an increasing number of parents are parking in 'No Parking' areas at the front of Arena Joondalup's main entrance while picking up children after swim squad training. This is a major safety concern as children and patrons are uneccessarily weaving between parked and moving vehicles, it is also creating traffic congestion for all patrons attending/exiting Arena at that time.

The No Parking signs are in position for safety and traffic flow reasons and I encourage you in future to use the marked parking bays, if this current situation continues infringements will be issued.

If you have any queries regarding the issue feel free to contact me.

Yours sincerely

PARENTS – NOTICES

The coach’s notice board with the time trials / competitions entry box will be used by the coaching staff to provide you with any notices / flyers / adverts / newsflashes for you to keep up to date with what we are up to.

This season I am planning on having a group EMAIL address so that all flyers can be sent out via EMAIL. This will mean you will get the flyers of what is going on around the place immediately and we can save the state’s old growth forests. Please send an EMAIL to my EMAIL address (rbonsack@arena.wa.gov.au) so that your address can be put in the Arena Swim Club Members EMAIL address book. (And they’ll also appear here of course! - Webmaster).

We will still provide newsletters and flyers for the coach’s notice board to support the EMAIL system. This way you will see what the swimmers are getting up to. These will go up when we send out the EMAILS. (PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE THE FLYERS FROM THE COACH’S BOARD)

As usual if you have any ???? then let me know.
