Presented by the College of Mount St. Joseph Music Department

The Mount Community Concert Band (MCCB) is one of the music ensembles which is part of the College of Mount St. Joseph (MSJ) music department and the MSJ Community Music Center. Members may register through the College for undergraduate credit or through the Community Music Center on a non-credit basis.

The Band's History

The MCCB was originally known as the Oak Hills Community Concert Band (OHCCB). Formed in 1978, as part of the Oak Hills community education program, the band served under the direction of Tom Tate until 1982. Mike Merry took the helm as the Band’s new director and the band continued to perform throughout Greater Cincinnati until it fell prey to the school district’s financial cutbacks in 1986.

The band soon found a new home at the College of Mount St. Joseph. Mike Merry led the new Mount Community Concert Band until the spring of 1994. Mike had an opportunity to do some work in Europe so he handed over his baton to Tom Stone. Tom accepted this position on an interim basis for one year. During 1994 and 1995 we also enjoyed the luxury of having Bernie Finfrock serve as assistant director and oboe player. In the spring of 1995 several candidates had an opportunity to run the band through a rehearsal. Band members voted on whom they thought would be the best fit for our organization and Kenny Bierschenk was selected. Kenny continues the tradition of challenging us to perform to the best of our abilities, while serving the community.

Ed Loar
Community Band Service Award

The Ed Loar award is presented each year to a long-term band member who has demonstrated unusual devotion to the band, and makes significant contributions to the band beyond the normal participation as a musician.

The award is named to honor the memory of Ed Loar, a member who truly exemplified community band service.  Ed selflessly shared his time, talent, and energy to make the MCCB better.
