The history of the New York Knicks stared when they became the licesed member of the Basketball Association of America in 1946. Later on it became the authorized member of NBA in 1949. The team originally was known as “knickerbockers,” or “knickers” after the Dutch immigrants who settled in New York in the 17 th century. It distinctively refers to their dressing style. They simply rolled up their pants just below their knee, which became famous as “knickerbockers” or “knickers.” The Knicks still get their identity from the city to which they belong. The Bolton Celtics being the other one.
 
 

Ned Irish, who was responsible for the basketball operations at Madison Square Garden , signed Knicks in 1946 as one of the 11 original BAA teams. On 1 st November 1946 , the Knicks received an opportunity to play against the Toronto Huskies in the league's first season game. The Knicks led by 68-66. In 1947, Joe Lapchick was employed as their head coach. After the dawn of the NBA in 1949, the coach's meticulous efforts bore fruits. He led the team in five consecutive playoff appearances. In the early 50's Nathaniel “Sweetwater” Clifton ruled the game with his rebounding skills. Guard Dick McGuire and center Harry “the Horse” Gallatin also helped the team to advance to the NBA final playoffs. In the late 1960s and early 1970s the team emerged as a dominant team with the players like Reed, Walt Frazier, Dave DeBusschere, Bill Bradley, and guard Dick Barnett. In the 1969-70 season, the Knicks became the modest recipient of their first NBA glory. Immediately after the retirement of Reed, the Knicks witnessed their downfall. For the next nine seasons, the Knicks did not mark any achievement in playoff series.

The Knicks reached its apex in the late 80s with the introduction of Patrick Ewing. He delivered a promising career and upturned the team's fate. Under the invigilation of coach Pat Riley, the Knicks became one of the NBA's top teams. In 1995, following the guidelines of their new coach, the Knicks advanced to the NBA finals after defeating the Miami Heat, Atlanta Hawks, and Indiana Pacers.

The New York Knicks play in blue, orange, and white sports shirt. The design of their logo is a 3-D script viz. "NEW YORK KNICKS" in orange, blue and silver above a basketball. Their home Arena is Madison Square Garden.
