It was named after the Dutch settlers who established the city of New York in 1600's. The Knicks played their first season playoff in Toronto 's historic Maple Leaf Gardens and won the 10 of their 12 inaugural games. With the joining of former Harlem Globetrotter star Nathaniel "Sweetwater" Clifton as one of the first black players in the NBA Knicks and Joe Lapchick as a head coach, the Knicks made the playoffs happening by setting a record of 36-30 during the 1950-51 season. In the late 60's and early 1970s, the Knicks were still anticipating their first league championship, when head coach Red Holzman organized an outstanding team of energetic and skilled players who believed in the fundamentals like "Hit the open man" and "See the ball." His list included all the prospective future Hall of Famers: centers Willis Reed and Jerry Lucas, guards Walt Frazier and Earl Monroe, and forwards Dave DeBusschere and Bill Bradley. They all gave their best and reached the NBA finals, detaining the prestigious NBA titles in 1970 and 1973. Reed oblivion of his serious thigh injury assisted his team to mark the triumph. He personified the team's enthusiasm. With his retirement the Knick's status as one of the league's top teams came to an end for at least a decade.

The Knicks drafted high-scoring forward Bernard King in the early 80s. Though he proved his will, but due to an injury, he failed to bring back home the credit. The Knicks employed former Lakers coach Pat Riley before the 1991-92 season. He assisted the club to become one of the leading NBA's team. In 1995 the Indiana Pacers defeated the Knicks in the conference finals.

Annoyed by their incompetence Riley abandoned the team to coach Miami Heat. In 1999, the Knicks finished with the eighth-best record in the Eastern Conference and in the postseason the team defeated the Miami Heat, Atlanta Hawks, and Indiana Pacers to advance to the NBA Finals with Jeff Van Gundy as their new instructor who resigned in 2001-02 season. Currently the team is coached by Lenny Wilkens. The current stars of the team are Shandon Anderson, Vin Baker, Kurt Thomas, Tim Thomas etc.
