Abstract

The current experiment tested for the effect of creating false memories of words. Eighteen participants were asked to use a Visual Basics program to run an experiment on recall. Participants ran a series of 3 tasks. The first task was a word memorization task of 72 words, in which each word was briefly flashed on a computer screen. The second task was a series of math problems to solve after each completed word list. The third and final task was a recognition test in which the subjects were given instructions on making old-new and remember-know judgments on the words they had previously seen. The findings show that the subjects judged the critical lure words as "Old" and "Remember" in the same manner as they chose the studied words, suggesting that false memories were created.
