The Recent Past...
It is a Golden Age in Amber and the Chosen Rulers, Random and Vialle have stepped down with the blessing of the Unicorn to retire into Shadow to live like 'normal' people and raise children.
Ascending to the Throne to take their place, chosen by both the Unicorn and the Pattern, is the one Prince of Amber who never sought the position: Benedict. At his side, the woman who, hundreds of years ago, all but sold her soul to the Pattern to save his life: Janelle, daughter of Corwin and Florimel.
As the day of Coronation draws near, every corner of Amber bristles with soldiers - men who are strangers to Amber. Arden's Rangers and the City Guard have been put on heightened alert, the castle seems to have sprouted new guards overnight, in addition to the Guard of the soon - to - be Crowns. Various members of the Family and staff have reported incidents that they found personally disturbing. Random seems distraced even as he goes out of his way to avoid his eldest brother, who seems to be, even for Benedict, to be in a less than happy frame of mind, as opposed to Julian, who seems abnormally happy with it all.
Observers are forced to ask themselves: Just what the hell is going on?
Present Day...
With the resolution of several of the "little things", things have once again settled into a peaceful flow.
The reign of Benedict & Janelle has been without incident for months now. Random and Vialle have gone from Amber, though Her Serene Grace makes the ocassional visit to Rebma to spend time with Llewella.
Merlin has long since returned to Chaos and no one has heard any rumors of trouble from there.
And yet, as always in The One True City, there is an undercurrent of...something...
