nerdy, buried talents
My funky music
Anyone can learn music -- once you learn the notes, listen to the rhythms and start practicing and experimenting, everything comes into place. That's all well and good --
if your instrument is something recognizable, like a piano, voice or guitar. But a bluegrass classic? Haydee Lopez explains.
Yeah, I guess you saw my funky instrument, the accordion. To be very honest, I was somewhat ashamed of that instrument. I
mean, do you remember watching "Family Matters" on Friday nights with the ever so nerdy Steve Urkle
who played the accordion? Well, based on that stereotype, I have been very quiet about my talent.
When I was eight years old, I was introduced to the accordion through a family friend. They
attended one of my friend’s concerts and got me interested in learning an instrument. The accordion
orchestra, called the Accordioneers were actually predominantly Filipino! My parents got the information
from our friends and soon enough the music instructor came to my house and taught me how to play
the accordion.
Little did I know that I would play the accordion for the next twelve years. I
started out with a small starter accordion, just to learn the basics, then eventually moved on
to a bigger one with more bass buttons and more switches to the right for a variety of tunes. As I got
older, taller, and more serious about studying music, I moved on to a bigger, more complicated
instrument that allowed more intricate songs to be played.
But as a I got to build a relationship with the Lord, I soon realized and accepted all the things
that happened to me was just a part of God’s plan -- including playing the accordion. Perhaps He wants me
to get musically involved with Him. ...
Editor's Note: The accordion is used in several music genres like jazz, rock, folk, Celtic and classical.
