What can you expect when you choose for bilingual education at the Berlage Lyceum?

The students that choose for bilingual education after the primary school learn to speak and write English in a very good way. It is different than on other schools with normal havo or vwo, because when you do bilingual education you have about half of all subjects in English. This means that the teacher speaks English to you and you speak English to the teacher and other classmates. It sounds very difficult, but after a few weeks you get used to that and you will notice that you already can speak some English! Bilingual education makes you learn English much faster, while it is also nicer and easier than on normal schools.

The bilingual education, which is given for havo and vwo, at our school gives a lot of attention to culture. This means you will go to museums and you visit theatre performances. You can also participate in a theater workshop or a theatre group yourself.

The teachers that give their subjects in English have had a special education, which is called Content and Language Integrated Learning. Some of  the teachers are native speakers or near native speakers, so their native language is English.

The thavo and tvwo educate you to two formal examinations: the regulated havo- or pre-university education-diploma and the examination for the International Baccalaureate Certificate English Language A2. The IB-certificate is being accepted by almost all universities over the whole world as a prove that you control English good enough, without an additional preparatory year, that you can follow higher education on this language.

A very special thing about this program at our school is that there is a school trip each year to another country. The first and second year you will go to England for a week, where you will visit a school and sleep in a youth hostel. In the third grade it has been some sort of tradition to earn money by washing cars, running a sponser-run, do the catering on a reunion, etc. to pay the tickets for......Canada! When you go on the ten day trip to Canada you will stay in  Toronto and st. Catharines (near the Niagara waterfalls). You will stay there at guest families, so you will have an even better look at how the culture is in this country. For further information about those trips you can go to http://www.berlage.esprit-sg.nl and by clicking on the link fotoalbum.
