Chapter 8:

As Faith and I were walking down the hall we heard mumbling coming from the kitchen.  “Good, he’s still on the phone.  Laura, do me a favor,” she paused waiting for me to answer.  “Sure,” I said, wanting her to continue.  She looked passed my shoulder as if to make sure we weren’t being “followed.”

“Okay Mrs. Bond, what’s up?”  I snickered.  She looked back at me and cracked a huge smile.  “Go tell Jeff to wait 5 minutes, then to come to my room,” she said evilly, giving me a look.  “Oh, I so don’t like that look.  I don’t think I wanna know why, but what if Jeff asks why?” I asked wearily.  “Tell him it’s a surprise, but if he must know, then tell him I went to go, umm, setup,” she finished, leaving my side and walking to her room.  I stared at her and kept wondering what changed her.  Was it the trip?  Or was it just Jeff?  I’ll find out sooner or later, just as long as she’s happy I’m not gonna worry about it.  The sound of muffled laughter brought me out of my thoughts.  I smiled and made my way towards the sound.  I walked into the kitchen to find Jeff, leaning against the stove, his left hand on his hip, and his face content from listening to the person on the phone.  I knocked lightly on the doorframe to bring his attention from his bare feet towards me.  He scrambled to stand up straight and put his finger to his lips.  He then put his finger up like to tell me to wait a minute.  Suddenly he waved me over to where he was standing and I obliged, walking cautiously over with a smile on my face.

“Man, I want you to talk to someone,” he said into the phone.  “It doesn’t matter who, it’ll be worth it,” he finished while looking at me.  I started shaking my head no and put my hands up to stop his advance towards me, phone in hand.  “What do you mean, girl or guy?  You don’t trust me?” he asked trying to act hurt with a huge smile plastered on his face.  I motioned for him to cover the phone.  “Hold on one minute,” he said into the phone, then put the phone onto his chest to cover it.  “You are so talking to him,” Jeff told me.

“No way, maybe if I knew who it was,” giving a little hint for him to tell me.  “Nah, then it wouldn’t be as exciting, and yes, you are talking to him,” he finished while lifting the phone back to his ear.  “You still there?”  He asked.  “Aiight, one more sec,” he said covering the phone once again.  “Jeff, Faith told me to tell you to go into her room in five minutes,” I said checking my watch, “Which would be now,” I finished, looking back up.

“Great, here!”  He said as he flung the phone at me and raced out of the kitchen.  I almost dropped the phone as it came flying towards me.  “Damn, he needs a leash,” I lightly laughed.  I put the phone to my ear.  Heavy breathing; that’s what I heard.  I let out a deep breath and finally got the courage to say something.

“Hello?” I asked in a small voice, now holding my breath, getting butterflies in my stomach.

“Hello?” He answered back.  “Who, may I ask, is this?”  He asked sweetly in a southern drawl?  I let out my breath.

“Matt?” I asked out loud.  Why didn’t I think it was Matt before?  Of course Jeff would call his brother.

“Yes, who’s this?” He asked once again.  I suddenly got excited and beamed.

“Well, Mattie, sorry I didn’t get to call you earlier…I might have a little later.  Nice to hear your sexy voice again,” I purred seductively into the phone.

“I’m sorry, but do I know you?” He asked, confusion shining through his voice.

“I’m offended.  We didn’t only meet last night, but you gave me your number, handsome,” I replied jokingly, but tried my best to sound serious.

“Uhh, gimme a clue,” he said.

“Matt Hardy, how many women do you give your number to in one night?” I asked trying to sound pissed when I was truly ecstatic.

“Are you calling me a slut, Laura?” He asked.  I could definitely tell he was smiling.  I felt tingly when he said my name.

“Maybe.  What if I am?” I asked in a challenging voice.

“Then I’d have to come over there and punish you,” he said seductively.

“Is that a promise?” I asked, surprising myself.  Did I just say that?  What’s wrong with me?  I know what’s wrong, I’ve got a crush.  I giggled softly.

“Oh yeah.”  He stated, “when can I come over?”  He asked excitedly.

“Umm,” I thought out loud.  I looked down at what I was wearing; same as what I was when I got out of the shower.  Whoa!  Jeff saw me in only a bra and pants?  I screamed in my head, but it’s not like he hasn’t seen it before.  Hold up, that didn’t sound too good.  I chuckled.

“You there?” Matt asked.  Oops, I forgot he was on the phone, my bad.

“Yeah, how about 15 minutes?” I asked looking at the clock…Almost 11:30.

“Fine by me,” he commented.

“Would you like some lunch?” I asked, hoping he would.  I’d probably have to cook something up for Faith later anyway.

“Definitely, what’s your address?”  He asked as I heard shuffling in the background.

“75 Main Street, don’t be late, sexy,” I said, hanging up the phone, not waiting for a reply.  I ran up the steps in twos and raced to my room.  I needed something to wear and fast.
