Basics
Before you can begin web design, you should have
an understanding about the Internet. I'm going to give you a quick
and basic lesson here.
Before You Begin
Let's begin by discussing what you need to get
started. Of course to get started on the Internet, you need to have
a connection or to be logged in to the Internet. You get this with
the use of an ISP or Internet Service Provider. Click
here to learn how to find an ISP.
After you have a connection to the Internet, the
next step is to have an application or program that will allow you
access to the Internet, a browser. There are a few different browser
programs for this, the most popular being Internet Explorer, which
is usually offered with the operating system of a Windows based
computer. If you are working on a Windows based computer, then you
probably have Internet Explorer. To find out, click on Start, then
select Programs, and look for Microsoft Internet Explorer, in the
Program list. If you do not see it in the list, then it has not
been installed on your computer.
The second most popular browser program is Netscape
Communicator, which is a Sun Systems product. Communicator will
even incorporate you email and news groups in the same program.
It is nice, however not as advanced as the Microsoft Internet Explorer
browser.
If you do not have a browser on your computer then
you can go to any store that sells software for a computer and purchase
one, or you can go to the Internet and download one. Below are some
links to either Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Communicator.
Simply click on the links to go and view more information about
each program to see which is right for you.

Since Microsoft Internet Explorer, (IE) is the
most popular browser, which is the one that I will focus on here.
To use this program is very simple. You type the URL - Universal
Resource Locator, or simply put the web address of where you would
like to go, in the address bar of IE.
Searching The Internet
Next you need to learn how to search for a web
site if you do not know its web address, or if you would like more
information about a topic. |
