China

In July 2001 I went to visit my Chinese Tibetan friend, Karsangjamtso (Karjam).   He lives outside of the Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR) but, as you can learn pretty quickly, the TAR is a line on a map, imposed by the Chinese government.  A large portion of ethnic Tibetans live outside of the TAR, either in China or in India (the latter are mostly economic/political refugees).  My trip through China took me from Qingdao to Xi'an, then to Linxia, Xiahe, Ganjia Grasslands, Hezuo, Machu, Ahwensung, and finally back to Qingdao.  I was in other places along the way, but I have only mentioned places where I took a significant number of photos.

Xi'an and Qingdao are purely Chinese cities, with the population almost entirely Han Chinese.  Linxia is a town which is predominantly Hui, a Muslim minority group.  The photos from Xiahe, Hezuo, Machu and Ahwensung are almost all of ethnic Tibetans.  However, there are a few people in those photos who may be Han or Hui, since the populations are mixed and I am including good photos, without regard to ethnicity.
