601. LEADERSHIP:
"The art of influencing human behaviour so as to accomplish a mission in the manner desired by the leader." -This definition should be committed to memory by all NCOs. This is the CF definition of leadership. Remember that leadership is an art and it takes time to become a good leader.
602. THE WANTS OF A FOLLOWER:
It is important that a leader meets the expectations of a follower. If a leader does not give a follower what he/she expects, then the follower will work only to satisfy their own needs. A follower will do this even if it means going against the group's objectives.
The following are wants of a follower:
- 1. Good leadership
- 2. To know what is expected of them
- 3. To be recognized for good performance
- 4. To be treated with dignity
- 5. To have opportunities for promotions
- 6. To enjoy a certain freedom of action
- 7. To engage in social activities
- 8. To receive an explanation for changes
- 9. To be assigned stimulating work
- 10. To be treated equally
- 11. High-contribution opportunity

603. QUALITIES OF A LEADER:
It takes a lot of hard work and determination to become a good leader. To lead Cadets effectively you must have their respect. As a leader there are certain qualities that you must possess if you are to earn the respect of the Cadets you lead. The following are the qualities of a good leader:
- 1. Honesty
- 2. A sense of responsibility
- 3. Confidence
- 4. Enthusiasm
- 5. Dependability
- 6. Patience
- 7. Decisiveness
- 8. Determination
- 9. Loyalty
- 10. Courage
