Chapter Twenty-Three

Two days had gone by since Nick had tearfully parted with Ally at the airport. They had talked practically every day on the phone since then. He sat in the comfort of his own apartment nestled in a fairly nice Los Angeles neighborhood. In only three days, Nick was going to have to leave again for Florida to begin recording with the guys and, as much as he loved being in the group, he wasn’t exactly looking forward to it. Sighing, he picked up the remote control and flipped on the television to MTV.

John Norris was giving his 10-to-the-hour news update. “And ladies, big let down here. Backstreet Boy Nick Carter has finally settled in a relationship with co-star Ally Parker whom he met on the set of his newest movie Sometimes Love Stumbles. The two had reportedly been crushing on each other since the very beginning.…”

“Damn,” Nick said outloud. “News sure does travel fast.”

In that instant, Nick’s telephone rang. Seconds in the conversation, Nick became flustered by the bombardment of words. It was AJ. “You’re dating her?” AJ practically yelled into the phone. “When were you planning on telling us? MTV knows. This is…”

Nick rolled his eyes. “AJ,” he started. “I just started dating Ally two days ago. She’s back in New York for God’s sakes. How MTV knows, I have no idea but you of all people should know how hard it is to keep a secret in this business. Remember Carly?”

AJ was quiet for a second. “Did we have to bring that up?”

“Sorry Bone. I was making a point.”

“Anyway,” AJ continued. “When are you getting out here? Kevin really wants to know.”

“Does the third ring a bell?” Nick asked, a little annoyed. “I’ve only told him like 20 times.”

“Geez Nick, calm down. I was just asking.” AJ reeled.

“You are always ‘just asking.’” Nick said. “Can’t any of you trust me for one second?”

AJ took a moment to respond. “Fine Nick. I’ll see you on the third.”

“Bye,” Nick said a little curtly as he hung up the phone.

Back at home, Ally was unpacking the rest of her clothes from her suitcase. It felt so good to be back in her own room, but the moment was short lived. Ally heard footsteps behind her and turned just in time to be startled by her brother Tom.

“Hey Al,” he said. “Jumpy much?”

“Shut up,” Ally laughed returning her brother’s hug. “How have you been?”

“Pretty good,” Tom said. He paused. “I heard about your Jeep. Did they really have to total it?”

“Probably not, but they did anyway.” Ally said. “What’d I miss.”

“Lisa has a boyfriend,” Tom laughed quietly to himself. “It’s so pathetic.”

Ally sisterly hit her brother in the arm. “Just because your love life is non-existent doesn’t mean that you have to make fun of Lisa’s.”

“Ouch,” Tom opened his mouth in faked shock. “Someone’s been keeping you on your toes,” he mused referring to Ally’s ability of insult. “Was it that boy band baby?”

“No, it was not ‘that boy band baby…’ it was Nick Carter.” Ally said as her thoughts drifted towards Nick. “But even if no one had, your insults are still as bad as when I left.”

“Ohh, that was bad Al.”

“Shut up Tom.” Ally said. “Anyway, what’s Lisa’s boyfriends’ name?”

“Jake, I think,” Tom declared. “But I’m not sure. Lisa talks about him pretty much every minute. Oh, before I forget. Ryan’s sister called. She wants you to call her back.”

Ally coughed in disbelief. “Yeah…right,”

“What do you mean ‘yeah…right. You’re dating her brother aren’t you.” Tom raised an eyebrow questioningly.

Ally sighed a little bit. “Actually Tom…Ryan beat the crap out of me and left me on a highway in southern California, so you know, I decided to break it off.” Anger was naturally rising in Ally’s voice and sarcasm was obviously breaking through.

“Whoa…What?”

It took ten minutes for Ally to explain the entire thing to her brother. By the time she had finished, disgust showed through on her brother’s face.

“I’d kill the bastard if I could…” Tom paused there when he realized his words. “Sorry Al, I meant that I’d just kick his ass.”

Ally smiled a little at her brother before turning to finish unpacking.

“So,” Tom continued. “Ally Parker is without a boyfriend. Is this a first for you?”

“Actually,” Ally started again. “I’m seeing someone,” her words were defiant.

“Oh your kidding me,” Tom laughed. “You don’t mean…”

“Who Tom, who don’t I mean?”

“…Nick?”

Ally smiled quietly. “Maybe, maybe not.”

“Oh my God. You’re dating Nick Carter. Ally…why?!”

“Because he’s a nice guy Tom. Why are you dating that Alicia girl?”

“That’s not the point,” Tom continued. “You don’t like the Backstreet Boys. I remember that you and Angela had screaming fights because you refused to like them. Now your dating one of them. How’d Angela take it.”

“She was okay with it…anymore questions Tommy?”
