“Hello?”
“Hey Frack, how are ya doing?”
“Hey!” Nick said. Brian’s voice seemed to clear his head somewhat. “I’m doing pretty good. We’re almost done shooting. One more day. How are you?”
“I’m doing good. Hey, I talked to Bone and he told me to tell you that “that Ally girl is a knockout.” Why do you always get so lucky.”
“Because I just do.” Nick answered with a smile as he thought of Ally. “What’s up?”
“Well, to tell you the truth, we need to make a decision really fast.”
“About what?” Nick asked.
“Remember that deal that we got to put one of our songs on the soundtrack to your movie.”
“Yeah,” Nick said. “What’s your point.”
“The point,” Brian defended, “Is that we have no idea which song we are going to use and the company needs to know by next week. Do you have any suggestions?”
“Not really,” Nick said almost instinctively. Then he thought back to that night that he and Ally had sang together in that karaokee bar. “Wait, maybe I do.”
“Uh oh.” Brian teased. “What is it this time.”
“Well, you know Ally?”
“Yeah, we talk all the time…” Brian said sarcastically.
“Shut up Bri. I’m being serious. A couple nights ago, Ally and me and Matt and Sophie all took the extras out to a karaokee bar.”
“Ah, your favorite place in the world, right Frack?” Brian teased.
“Oh of course,” Nick said sarcastically. “Anyway…Sophie forced me and Ally to get on stage and sing together, and Brian, you’re not gonna believe this, but Ally’s amazing. I’m not just saying this either. She’s really good. Do you think that we could do a duet?”
Brian was silent for a moment. “My God Nick, you really have fallen for her. You know how long it takes to write and record a song. You don’t have that kinda time on your hands before we need to get our song into the company…”
“Listen Bri. Tomorrow we shoot the last scene. If I can start writing tomorrow night, maybe I could figure something out in time to get into the studio and record before next week.”
“You’ve lost it.” Brian said uneasily. “You have completely lost it.”
“No, I’m dead serious.”
“How do you know that Ally is even gonna want to sing with you. If Sophie had to force you and Ally on stage, what makes you think that recording a duet is gonna be any different?”
“Just give me a chance. I’ll call you tomorrow. Okay?”
“Okay…” Brian finished. “Talk to you then.”
“Bye.” Nick hung up the phone and jumped off the bed and practically ran to Ally’s room with the offer.
“I don’t know what to do Ang.” Ally said. It had been a couple weeks since she and Angela had talked to each other on the phone but neither seemed to mind. They just picked up right where they left off. “Any ideas.”
“Well,” Angela started. “Number one, can I just say that I told you so.”
“About what?”
“That Nick Carter is the most gorgeous guy in the world.”
“Right Ang…anyway, what do I do? I serious think that I am in love with this guy.”
“Well, why not just tell him. I’m sure that he feels the same way.”
“I don’t know if he does or not. Matt said that he thinks that Nick might like me, but if he doesn’t…”
“I’m sure he does,” Angela said, raising her voice in annoyance at her friend’s low self-esteem.
Suddenly, Ally heard a knock at the door. “Hold on Ang.” She covered the mouthpiece of the phone and walked past the bed where only days ago, Sophie’s suitcase had sat as she packed her things and said goodbye. “Two guesses on who this is,” Ally thought to herself as she turned the knob. “Guessed right,” she said out loud as her eyes met with Nick’s. “Hey, how are you?”
“Good,” Nick started. “Who are you talkin to,” he said motioning over to the phone.
“Oh, it’s Angela. Here. Hold this. I’m gonna grab a blanket because I am freezing.”
“What?” Nick asked a little astonished, as the cell phone was place in his hands.
“Ally, you still there?” came a voice on the other line.
“Hello?” Nick asked.
After a short pause, a slightly shocked voice came over the other line. “Who is this?”
Nick looked at Ally with uncertainty. “She’ll love me forever if you’d talk to her.” Ally begged.
After another few seconds of silence, Nick smiled at Ally. “Angela, this is Nick Carter.”
“Ah…eh…ah…” Angela started. “Hi…”
“How are you?” Nick asked still looking over at Ally who was on the verge of cracking up at her friends’ insanity over Nick Carter.
“G…G…Good…” Angela said. “What ab…out you?”
By this time, Ally had grabbed a blanket at was waiting by Nick until he was finished talking to Angela. “I’m gonna give you back to Ally, okay Angela? Here she is.” Nick covered the mouthpiece. “I think I killed her,” he said to Ally. “She hasn’t said much for a while.”
“She probably had a heart attack when she realized it was you. Anyway,” Ally grabbed the phone. “You okay Ang?”
Angela’s screams caused Ally to move the mouthpiece an arm’s length away from her ear. “Was that really him?!? Ally! Was that really him?”
“Yeah Ang.”
“Oh my God.” Angela said completely shocked. “Oh my God.”
Ally and Angela talked for a few more minutes before Angela ended the conversation. “Thank you so much Al. You…and Nick…made my week.”
“It was nothing. Bye Ang. I will see you in a week.” Ally clicked her phone off. “Sorry about keeping you.” She said to Nick. “Just to let you know, Angela says that you made her week. Anyway, did you need to talk?”
“Yeah,” Nick began, shifting his feet around on the carpeted floor. “Eh…Well…” “C’mon Carter, suck it up. Just tell her.” “Okay Ally, I’m just gonna spit this out. The record company called Brian yesterday and said that we had to get our acts together and pick a song for the soundtrack by the end of the week.” Nick paused.
“So…” Ally helped.
“So...We have no ideas whatsoever…and I was wondering if um, if you would like to, um…record a duet with me for the soundtrack.” Nick flinched as if Ally’s words could have to power to tear him apart.
“You’re kidding me.” Ally said in slight disbelief that Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys was actually asking her to sing with him. “Did you hear me? I suck. Just having me sing with you would ruin your carrer forever.”
“That’s such bullshit,” Nick said, raising his voice a little to get his point across. “Why can’t you just think for one second that you aren’t as bad at anything as you think you are. It’s really stupid.” Nick didn’t really mean for that to come out, but in a way, he was happy it had.
Ally thought for a moment. “If you really think that I could…”
“Of course you could.” Nick said attempting to push Ally further into her decision. “Geez Parker, don’t you trust me?”
“You,” Ally coughed. “Trust? Two words that should not even be in the same sentence together.” There was a pause before both Ally and Nick broke into laughter.
