Chapter One

“Oh man, it’s hot out here,” Allison Parker sighed and turned to her best friend Angela Jackson while attempting to fan herself with a stack of resumes’. “How much longer do you think we are going to have to wait in this line?”

“C'mon Al...Would you quit complaining? Here you are auditioning for a freakin movie role, and you are whining like a 5 year-old. You’re 19, don’tcha think that whining is a little unflattering? You didn’t drag me all the way to California for this, okay?”

“Sorry Ang. I think it’s just because I am so damn nervous. Do you think that I even have a chance? Look at all these people.” Ally said motioning over towards the line of about a total of 300 people both in front of and behind her.

“Ally...”

“What?”

“Shut up. I think that you have just a good a chance as anyone out here. Besides, if you run into trouble, just bat those gorgeous green eyes of yours at the director. That outta get you somewhere.”

“Thanks Ang, I’ll do that.” Ally replied sarcastically. “I'm really sorry that I put you through my variety of shit. This movie audition, college, Ryan…”

“To tell you the truth, I don’t know how I do it either.” Angela joked. “But, speaking of Ryan, how is your asshole of a boyfriend?”

“He’s not an asshole." Ally became quiet. "He just... looses it sometimes.”

“Okay, whatever you say Ally.” Angela decided let the topic drop even though in her mind, she wished that Ally would come to grips that her boyfriend was an insensitive and abusive jerk.

Ally knew what Angela was getting at but she didn't want to force herself to see some part of reality. She was 'happy' in this blissfully disfunctional life. For now at least...

Two hours later, the two had made it to the front of the line. Ally was shaking with nervousness, but she was determined to at least go in there and try to do her best.

“Next,” came a voice from inside the audition studio. Ally sighed as she hugged her best friend and walked through the door. Butterflies were forming in her stomach while she handed out copies of her resume’ and began her monologue. By the time Ally was finished reciting the lines, which she had practiced over a hundred times, she looked at the judges and noted that some of them had tears forming in their eyes. “That was perfect,” exclaimed the director. “I don’t mean to get your hopes up, but I think that you just may have gotten the part.”

“Thank you very much,” Ally said and she turned and left the studio.

Meanwhile, in a similar line, Nick Carter was also waiting, with his best friend Brian Littrell, to audition for the same movie. With yet another tour behind him, Nick had decided that he was going to test his acting skills during his down time. He looked around the hallway and noticed a few stares, pointing fingers, and snickering, but he just ignored it.

“You know Nick,” Brian started. “If you get this part, you are going to have to learn how to run a lot faster. Should we start calling you Leonardo DiCaprio?”

“Haha Brian, that’s funny...” The sudden announcement of his audition interrupted what was left of Nick’s failed attempt at defending himself.

“Wish me luck?” Nick half asked as he walked into the studio. After looking at his resume’ the judges gave Nick curious glances before allowing him to begin his monologue. After he had finished, he was surprised by the somewhat pleasant looks that the judges were giving him.

“We’ll call you,” pledged the director.

“Thank you,” Nick said as he shook hands with the judges and left the room.

“How’d you do?” Brian asked, greeting Nick outside the door.

“I’m not sure, but doesn’t, we’ll call you normally mean that you don’t have a chance in hell?”

“Do you think I know? I’m a singer, not a director. What is this movie even about anyway?”

“It’s a romantic drama.” Nick mumbled trying to be as quiet as possible in hopes that Brian wouldn’t hear what he was saying to make more jokes.

“A romantic drama. Sounds like something you would do. Are you attempting to add a little more excitement to your sex life?” Brian laughed.

“Anyway,” Nick began, trying to reroute the conversation, “…are you hungry? I’m starving.”

“When aren’t you?” Brian answered with another laugh. Twenty minutes later, Nick and Brian were driving around downtown LA looking for the nearest fast food restaurant. “Nothing to fancy for the movie star,” Brian said. “We would want you to get an even bigger head than you already have.”

“Shut up Frick,” Nick said as he pulled up to the Burger King drive thru window and placed his order, “What do you want?”
