Chapter Seven

Day Two

Nick’s eyes jolted open as Devyn banged on Nick’s door. “C’mon Carter. Class starts in five minutes, are you coming or not?”

“Screw you,” Nick yelled.

“Pissy, pissy,” Devyn muttered. “What you aren’t a morning person?”

Nick ignored Devyn’s comment. Because of his date last night, he felt that he had earned the right to be upset. Nick had been completely bored the entire night. The only time that he was actually paying attention to a word that Alicia was saying was when she was talking about Devyn. “Why do I always do this?” Nick said. “Am I just drawn to people who bring out the asshole in me?”

Devyn interrupted Nick’s thoughts once again. “I made you a bagel. It’s on the counter,” Devyn yelled through the door. “I have to get the class, so I’m leaving you here whether you’re almost ready or not.” After a brief pause, she softly continued. “Thank you, by the way,”

“For what?” Nick yelled back.

“For the food. Mike and I really appreciate it…Anyway, I’m leaving.” Nick heard Devyn’s squeaky tennis shoes against the wood floor as she left the dorm.

Devyn was mentally kicking herself. She should have never backed down and been nice like that. In some demented way, she liked having someone to fight with. It was like her emotional punching bag for everything that had gone wrong in her life. It definitely wasn’t fair but Nick seemed to have no problem dishing it out either. But now he had a weakness on her. “This isn’t fair,” Devyn thought as she read through the lab the class was preparing today. Absently, Devyn’s eyes raised from the page and she felt herself looking around…for him. Once she realized exactly what she was doing, Devyn jumped back to the page and continued reading.

Devyn’s hand slapped the side of the pool signaling the end to her rigorous swimming workout. She checked the clock. “Shaved four seconds off of that bitch,” Devyn silently congratulated herself as she climbed out of the pool and wrapped a towel around her. Once she had made her way to the locker room, she pulled her watch from her locker and checked the time. The face read 9:30. “God it’s late,” she said, worrying about the term paper she was supposed to complete by tomorrow. “Just like me to friggin procrastinate for two hours at the pool…damn it.”

Devyn slipped on her running pants and pulled her hair into a bun before grabbing her bag and leaving the locker room. As she was replacing her card into the file, she heard familiar voices behind her. She turned just in time to see Mike throwing a towel around his shoulder and entering the small café at the on campus athletic club. “Who was that other voice?” Devyn asked herself as she tapped Mike on the shoulder. He had been lifting and was extremely sweating. “Eww,” Devyn made a face.

“You made the choice,” Mike said. “How are you doing?”

“Pretty good, I haven’t seen you all day…”

“Nick and I waited in line for hours for tickets to the Warped Tour…and guess what?”

“You got them!?!” Devyn exclaimed a little loudly. “Wait a sec…you and Nick…why would you and Nick go get tickets all day. You both had classes all day.”

“I woke up late and he just plain didn’t feel like going to class. You should see how upset you are making him…”

Devyn interrupted. “Making him upset! Are you kidding me?”

“No, we talked about it all day…”

“Wonderful,” Devyn sighed. “Just great!”

“Relax Dev…he’s not that bad. Besides, we got you a ticket too.”

“Thank you,” Devyn said, wholeheartedly. She blinked the chlorine out of her eyes. “Who are you lifting with…Matt?”

“Nope,” Mike said. “I thought I’d show Nick around. The kid is good competition for me. He benches damn near 230.”

Nick!?! Why Nick?”

Mike ignored Devyn’s outburst as Nick walked towards them carrying a gym bag over one of his nice sculpted shoulders and a towel over the other. “We were just about to get something to eat,” Mike said. “Would you like to join us.

Devyn looked over at Nick who was shaking his head at her. “I have to start my paper for Art History…but thanks though.” Devyn ignored Nick’s fake sad face.

“I’ll see you when we get back then,” Mike said. At that, he and Nick turned into the café and disappeared behind the door.

Devyn slowly made her way in the dark towards her car. She had to jumpstart it to get it running before she left and prayed that this wasn’t going to be the case now. Luckily, it started without much trouble and Devyn drove back to the dorm. Once she had unlocked the door, she dropped her bag at the floor, made herself some French Vanilla Roast and got to work on her paper. At 10:45, Devyn jumped at the sound of a click of a key in the door. It was only Mike and Nick, back from dinner. “I call shower first,” Mike declared. And with that, he was off leaving Nick and Devyn alone in the same room.

“Back so soon,” Devyn said, faking sadness. “What a shame.”

“Oh Devyn, Devyn, Devyn, not even you could ruin my mood. Tickets to the Warped Tour and I just finished the best burger of my life…you can try, but you won’t succeed.” Devyn just continued to ignore Nick as she typed away at her report. The shower could be heard in the distance as Nick sat down on the couch and click on the television. Devyn could only take so much of the crap cartoons that Nick was watching before she snapped, “Nick, turn that crap off…this is due tomorrow and I really need silence.”

To annoy her, Nick cranked the volume on the TV.

“Damnit Carter,” Devyn stood up and attempted to grab the remote from Nick.

Meanwhile Nick waved the remote around, fighting Devyn off with the motions of his body. Out of desperation, Nick stuck the remote more than halfway down his pants. “There, I bet you won’t go for it now,” Nick said, leaning back against the couch and putting his hands over his head.

“Think again,” Devyn said, reaching into Nick’s pants and grabbing the remote. “You act as though I’ve never been with a guy before.”

Nick was startled but turned on. He quickly attempted to snap himself out of it and protested. “I feel so violated.”

“Get use to it,” Devyn said as she flipped the TV off and turned back to her seat, Nick caught her by her arm causing Devyn to spin around on her heels. “What are you doing?” she labored, extremely stunned.

“Give it back,” he said, attempted to act domineering.

“Yeah right,” Devyn said. A smiled crept across her face. She looked directly into Nick’s eyes and shoved the remote slightly down her swimsuit so that it was right next to her breasts. “There, I dare you to go for that.”

“You act like I’ve never been with a women before,” Nick said, mocking her. He moved his hands as though he was going to go for the remote.

Devyn caught them. “Nice try Nick…remember, you and I have disliked each other for the two days you’ve been living here.”

Something hot and fiery burst throughout Nick’s being. He twirled Devyn around without warning, grabbed her by the shoulders and pinned her to the wall. If he and Devyn hadn’t of been on bad terms, Nick would have kissed her right then and there, but instead, he lowered his gaze downward. With her shoulders pinned against the wall, Devyn’s chest was trust forward and her full breasts commanded Nick’s attention as they begged for focus. “Are you going to get the remote for me, or am I going to have to do it myself?” Nick warned.

Devyn would have leaned in to kiss Nick in the situation she was in now. For some reason, she felt passion instead of fear. She shook her head as if to clear her mind and squirmed from Nick’s grasp. She reached down her swimsuit and extracted the remote. She handed the remote to Nick and then quickly sat down in front of the laptop she and Mike shared and continued typing. She was grateful when the shower stopped and Nick departed from the room. She couldn’t believe the move she had just pulled and went to bed that night pondering if Nick had felt what she had felt in that one fiery instant.
