Wednesday meant no physics class so Mike, Devyn, and Nick all slept in until 9:00 when Mike and Devyn had Accounting and Nick had Song Writing and Music Theory.
At 11:00, Devyn was in the dorm again, on the phone with her friend Mary Ann making plans for lunch that day. “So I’ll meet you after my Pre-Calc class at the Deli…does that sound right.”
“Perfect,” Mary Ann agreed. With that, Devyn hung up the phone. She sat back in the chair in the kitchen just long enough to take a breath before heading back out the door to her Pre-Calc class. She left the dorm planning on skipping her Spanish Lit class entirely so that she could catch up with Mary Ann. She would be back in time for her Shakespeare class, which met on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. As she made her way to her Jeep, she spotted Nick walking with some guy who Devyn had seen around campus before. She ignored him, as she was still confused about her feelings, and headed out for Pre-Calc.
Devyn was throwing around clothes in her room when Nick walked through the door. He knocked on the open door before stepping into Devyn’s room. “Are you still sane?” he asked.
“Just looking for a shirt…Devyn has a date tonight.” Devyn continued piling through her clean clothes for her sweater. She finally found it and pulled it over her white tee shirt. “See ya,” she said, stepping in front of Nick and leaving the dorm.
Nick stood in Devyn’s room for a moment thinking about the information she had just presented him with. She had a date tonight. “I hope you have a lousy time,” Nick muttered to himself. He looked around Devyn’s room and took in the sight. The words “Disaster Area” came to mind. The only thing good about Devyn’s room that Nick could point out was the smell. He love the way that Devyn smelled. Whether it was her shampoo or perfume, he compared her scent to that of coconut and vanilla. “Oh well,” Nick said and with that, he decided to call Brian to check in and tell him about all the events that he happened in the past three days.
Devyn walked out of the dorm with a sense of pride. She was finally showing up Nick Carter, trying to make him jealous instead of the other way around. At lunch today, Mary Ann had introduced Devyn to a great guy. “Thank you Mary Ann,” Devyn thought as she met her date, a dark and handsome guy named Tom in front of the movie theater and together they walked into the lobby.
Devyn woke up with tears in her eyes. Last night had been the worst experience of her life. After the movie, she and Tom went out for coffee. On the walk home, Tom had basically attacked Devyn with words that stung hard. He had made so many comments about adoption, personally attacking Devyn, and even though it was just talk, Devyn felt ripped apart. “Should’ve used those damn kickboxing moves.” Devyn thought, imagining Tom’s face connecting with her foot. Even though Devyn had fought Tom off, calmly pointing out the good points and arguing her case she still felt hurt, unwanted, and extremely ugly. “Why aren’t there any decent single guys out there?” Devyn asked herself. “And more so, why can’t I find any of them?” She slid out of bed and walked into the kitchen. She was the first one up and as a rule, the first one up was required to make the coffee. She slowly poured Colombian Roast into the coffee maker and flipped the switch to ON. She watched as the coffee filled to pot, permeating the kitchen with the scent of coffee. “I wonder if my real mom was addicted to coffee like I am,” Devyn thought as she sat on the patio in the cold and sipped her coffee. At 5:15 Devyn walked into the dorm and saw that no one else was up yet. “Big surprise,” she muttered sarcastically. She decided that she would go for a jog and then hop in the shower before her 7:00 physics class.
Nick had waited up for her for most of the night. Every second that Devyn wasn’t in the dorm, Nick was worried about her. “Why,” he thought as he opened his eyes. “I hate this girl…she hates me…why and I worried about her.” Nick made his way to the kitchen and saw that the coffee maker was keeping a fresh pot warm. He poured himself a mug and walked towards Devyn’s room. He knocked on the door…no answer…he knocked again…still no answer…he finally opened the door a crack and realized that there was no one in Devyn’s room at all. Nick felt panic flood through his body. It was 5:30…where in the hell would Devyn be a 5:30 in the morning? Nick sat on the couch in the living room waiting for either Mike to wake up or Devyn to come back.
Finally at 6:15, Devyn’s key could be heard in the door. She opened it slowly and shut it quietly behind her before turning around and jumping at the sight of Nick. “You’re up.”
“You’re quick. Where were you?”
“Hawaii Nick, I decided to hop a plane there last night…I went for a jog…okay?”
“Excuse me for being worried about you,” Nick reeled, gladly picking up the hostilities where they had left off.
“Why couldn’t you have worried last night when I actually needed it?” Devyn thought. All of the sudden, the phone rang. Devyn beat Nick to it on the first ring. “Hello?” she said.
“Um…hi…is Nick there?” came a voice on the other end.
“Hold on a sec,” Devyn said with a sigh. She practically threw the phone at Nick. “It’s for you.”
“Congratulations Devyn, you can follow directions.” Nick said before saying “hello” into the receiver. “Bone!” he exclaimed. “How are you?”
“Bone?!” Devyn mouthed to Nick. Nick’s response was turning his back towards her.
“Fine,” Devyn said as she walked off into the bathroom to take a shower before class started.
“What is this crap Dev?” Mike asked as he forked through a plate of noodles and same strange green sauce.
“Linguine with spinach sauce,” Devyn called from the kitchen. “It’s all we had left to make for dinner Mike…sorry it’s not a five star culinary meal.”
“It’s fine,” Mike called after her after he tasted it. “Actually, it’s pretty good.”
Nick on the other hand didn’t seem to agree. “Are you kidding me Mike?”
“Not really,” Mike said as he stuffed another forkful into his mouth.
Devyn appeared before both of them, still depressed about last night and sat down. She set a plate in front of her and began eating.
“What,” Nick said. “No insults, no cutdowns…what is the world coming to?”
“No one gives a shit,” Devyn said as she sprinkled pepper onto her plate of noodles.
“Someone’s in a bad mood…” Nick trailed off.
Devyn let it drop. She wasn’t in the mood to fight with Nick. It was all she could do to keep herself from crying.
“Uh, I can’t take anymore of this…it’s disgusting…” Nick said. His words had stung as he intended them to but he gained no satisfaction from them, only guilt and regret as Devyn burst into tears.
“It’s nothing,” Devyn said as she stood up from the table and left. “Nevermind,” she called over her shoulder, still allowing tears to fall from her eyes.
