Ten minutes later, Nick was parking his car in the student lot and grabbing a folder that he had bought only last night so that he would have something to bring into classes on his first day. Slowly, he trudged across the campus and nervously watched other students interact as if they had known each other their entire lives. Seeing this, Nick felt as though he would never be able to “click” with other people. He had never really had to do this before seeing as how this had been a huge step from Nick’s prior education, in the back of a tour bus in between cities while on tour. Now he would be going to school on a huge campus with hundreds of other people and living in a dorm room with two other people that he had never met before.
Meanwhile Devyn and Mike were practically running across campus, Starbuck’s coffee in hand. “Damnit Devyn! I knew that you would make us late!” Mike yelled.
“Shut up Mike,” Devyn defended. “The only one who is gonna get crap for this is me. Professor Lockwood hates me already…being late isn’t going to change a thing for the better.”
“You never know. Maybe if you were on time for once…”
“Just drop it Mike,” Devyn said, slowing her pace to a walk and staring at something. Mike in turn did the same thing.
“Why are we stopping?” Mike asked, slowly looking around searching for what Devyn was seeing.
“What the hell is going on over there?” Devyn half asked to Mike as she pointed to a large group of people crowded around the math building.
Mike smiled and shrugged his shoulders. “Don’t know,” he said, grabbing Devyn by the shoulders and turning her in the direction of the science building. “Keep moving.”
“No Mike, I wanna see what’s going on.”
Mike rolled his eyes as he followed Devyn towards the group of people. He knew better than to argue with Devyn as her curiosity almost always motivated her, and sometimes the outcome wasn’t always positive. Mike could remember the countless times that he had bailed Devyn out of potentially life threatening situations. It was because Devyn felt that she had no real reason to live that she put herself in those situations, but Mike felt obligated to save his best friend whenever he could. Not that Devyn hadn’t been there for him hundreds of times too, it was just that Mike wasn’t the type of person who always got into trouble. Even at age 20, Devyn still hadn’t settled down and because of all the things going on at college, Devyn had free range to do whatever she wanted. Mike remembered back to last semester when Devyn had overdosed on heroin at a party and Mike had to carry her almost lifeless body into the ER. Mike was like the older brother that Devyn never had; always looking out for his “little sister.” Even when Devyn brought random guys to the dorm, Mike was always there the give them hell if the screwed up with her, which most of them did anyway on the account that Devyn was extremely insecure and extremely beautiful, although she would never think so.
In mid-step, Devyn decided that the time and effort into discovering the reason behind the crowd was too great and turned back in the direction of the science building.
“Finally,” Mike said. “You grew brains.”
Devyn ignored Mike’s comment and with a playfully thrown out middle finger continued on her way to the science building.
The group around Nick seemed to be closing in on him by the second. Nick could feel a small sense of panic set in, like when he had basically been mobbed after concerts. Even though the group was just curious and bodyguards were watching his every move, Nick was still nervous as hell. Seconds later, Nick decided to break away from the mob of people and walk quickly to the science building. Without paying any attention whatsoever to his surroundings, Nick bounded around a corner and ran smack into another person, knocking her down.
Devyn felt herself being thrown against the outside wall of the science building. All of her papers and books fell to the ground as she too felt herself hit the hard concrete. After a few seconds of immense pain, Devyn looked over to the person who had run into her. He was a tall guy, around 6’0’’ or so with blond hair and amazing blue eyes. If Devyn hadn’t of been so flustered, she probably would have been more polite. “What the hell?” she asked.
Nick was dumbfounded. He hadn’t even been to class yet and already he had made a complete fool out of himself, in front of a beautiful girl no less. He watched as delicate hands began picking up the strewn papers, finding it impossible to take his eyes off of the girl. Her intense green eyes burned with radiance and seemed to see into Nick’s soul. Her silky, dark brown hair was pulled into a ponytail and seemed to only accentuate her beautiful facial features. Her full, pink lips seemed to draw Nick’s attention, but when Nick snapped out of his state, he realized that the girl was talking. “Mike, can you help me up?” she asked.
Mike reached out his hand for Devyn and she quickly pulled herself from the ground. Devyn looked at the guy who had basically run her down. “Sorry,” she said, wiping scalding hot coffee from her once only clean shirt, even though she knew it wasn’t her fault.
Nick couldn’t say anything, only stand there gawking.
“Nevermind,” Devyn huffed. And with that, she disappeared around the corridor.
