“You’re fine Dev…quit whining.” Mike smiled a little while rolling his eyes.
“I’m not whining,” Devyn protested. “That coffee was damn hot and this is my last clean shirt.”
“Heaven forbid you have to do a little laundry,” Mike laughed.
“Bite me Mike…just shut up.”
Devyn and Mike sat back for a little and watched as the lecture hall filled with tired students who would obviously rather be in bed sleeping rather than sitting through a stupid lecture. Over the last semester, even students who gave a damn before began to discover how boring Professor Lockwood actually was. Devyn moved around in her squeaky chair, finding a comfortable position and prepared to doze off.
“Are you done yet?” came a voice from behind her.
“Actually, I’m not.” Devyn turned around and came face to face with the guy that had run into her earlier this morning. “Oh, it’s you,” she said curtly.
Nick was shocked to see the girl who he had practically tackled moments before. He found himself staring at her radiating beauty before replying. “Yeah…what’s your point.”
“You gonna apologize for knocking me out back there…?”
For some reason, Nick found it impossible to back down as this girl seemed to have the ability to intriguingly piss him off, but decided to spit out a quick, “Sorry,” before rolling his eyes.
“What the hell was that?” Devyn’s face told the story. She was about ready to go off on this guy. “Is it that difficult?”
“Not really,” Nick said shortly. He was beginning to feel more and more comfortable at Columbia now with each short comment he made. He was also enjoying his anonymity.
By this time, Mike was already sick of hearing these Devyn and this stranger argue. “Devyn, just turn around and ignore him,” Mike instructed. “If he’s smart, he’ll shut up so that you two can both gain a little maturity.” Mike was warning Nick in a sense without completely spelling it out for him.
Devyn looked unjustly at Mike before giving in and quickly tossing a dirty look in Nick’s direction before turning around in her seat. She then continued to move around to get comfortable and the chair continued to squeak obnoxiously. All of the sudden, Devyn felt icy fingers against the back of her neck. She jumped a little in her seat and turned around, once again facing the man who had knocked her over. “Yes?” she asked sharply.
“Would you just stop?” Nick asked, rolling his eyes. “That’s really annoying.”
“Why do you think I’m doing it?” Devyn replied.
Nick didn’t even need to think for a moment before he realized that Devyn was just trying to play on his nerves. “Are you sure you belong in this class?” Nick asked. “There’s an elementary school a couple miles from here.”
“You’re funny…” Devyn said in a sarcastic tone. “Maybe you should consider signing up for Campus Comedy Night. I hear they’re looking for idiots like you who are willing to stand up and make an ass out of themselves for fun…you wouldn’t have to try very hard.”
“Bet me?” At first, Nick thought this comeback was suitable, but after thinking about it for a little longer, he realized that he had screwed himself over again.
“Sure,” Devyn said. “What do you want dumbfuck?”
“Devyn,” Mike snapped. “Stop it…you’re acting like a two year old.”
“What’s your point Mike?” Devyn retorted.
“Ah, poor little Devyn…do you need your “man” over there to save her ass because you can’t do it yourself,” Nick chimed in.
“What would you know about saving yourself pretty boy? I’ll bet that you haven’t ever had to save your own ass once in your life.” Devyn was beginning to get mad. This guy was really getting to her but she didn’t know why. It wasn’t everyday that Devyn didn’t just drop a fight, but this guy basically played her to do it.
“You’d be surprised,” Nick said, slowly remembering all the times that he had been attacked by groups of screaming girls or the other times when he had practically gone after some guy for hitting on his girlfriend.
“Probably not,” Devyn laughed. “Unless you count stubbing your toe on a table and miraculously making it the couch saving your ass…you probably have no idea.”
“What would you know?” Nick shot back in playful anger.
Devyn rolled her eyes. “Just nevermind, it’s not like you are worth my time anyway.” With a quick sigh, Devyn turned around again, this time with no intention of ever speaking to that man again. Moments later, Devyn heard a girl talking loudly behind her. She turned to see Nancy, practically hanging off of the guy who she had been fighting with all morning. “Nancy…” she started. “What are you doing?”
Nancy gave Devyn a blank look. “Dev, don’t you know who this is?” Nancy was practically overflowing with excitement.
“Which would you rather,” Devyn asked. “Non-apologizing asshole or I-think-I-know-it-all prick.”
Nancy looked extremely hurt and waited a few seconds to reply. “No Dev, this is Nick Carter…from the Backstreet Boys”
