I got up the next morning and went downstairs. Tracy and Jennifer were still asleep upstairs and still hadn’t spoken to each other. Tracy had retreated to her room and ignored her.
I had come downstairs expecting to find Heather, since she wasn’t in her room, but it was empty.
“Weird,” I said to myself, then saw a note.
Hey guys,
I went shopping, I’ll be back in about a half an hour. It’s 8 o’clock now. Chao.
Heather
I glanced at the clock. ‘She should be back anytime,’ I thought. I grabbed the phone and dialed a familiar number.
“Hello, Littrell’s residence,” Jackie picked up.
“Hi, this is Erin.”
“Hey, sweetie! It’s been too long. How is college going? This is your second year, isn’t it?”
“Yeah. We just got off for Christmas break.”
“That’s nice.”
“Has Brian gotten there yet? I haven’t talked to him in a few days.”
“Brian? No, why?”
“He said he only had a week off for Christmas and he was going home.”
“Hmm… he told me that he didn’t think he was going to make it this year because of some press meetings and. Maybe you misunderstood him.”
“I don’t think so. I could’ve sworn that Heather said that Nick had a week off, too,” I thought it over. “But I guess that’s the only explanation. If you talk to him, can you ask him to call me on my cell? We need to talk,” I told her.
“Sure. It was nice talking to you! Call back anytime, and have a wonderful Christmas. Tell your family hello for me, okay?”
“I will. Bye, Jackie.”
I hung up. “He said he was going home for the week. Where is he?” I wondered.
Just then, two arms wrapped around my waste. “Right here.”
“Brian? Omigosh!” I gave him a hug. “What are you doing here?”
“Visiting you for Christmas, duh!” he laughed.
“Aww… is Nick here, too?”
“Yeah, he’s helping Heather.”
“With what?”
“Her Christmas present for Tracy and Jennifer,” he pointed out the window.
“Where are they going?” I saw Nick, Heather and Tracy on a boat, leaving the dock. “Who’s boat is that?”
