I spent Thanksgiving at home with my family, and saw some friends from high school. It was pretty fun, but lets face it, I missed Brian. When would I get to see him again? Spring Break?
Christmas Break was only a few days away, and I’d be home once again. But at least Brian would be back home in Kentucky and would maybe bother taking the time to call. Which he hadn’t been doing at all lately.
Like now for instance. I was in my dorm room, sitting by the phone. He was supposed to call at 7, and it was now almost 9.
Similar to yesterday, when he was supposed to call at 8, and didn’t til 8:30, and even then, only to inform me that he didn’t have time to talk and would call me at 7 today. Ha. Isn’t a relationship supposed to be between two people? Because I was starting to feel like I’d never been so alone.
Something had to change. I’d been putting up with this since we parted ways in August. And it had gotten worse in the last few weeks. What gives?
I finished my essay for English class. Luckily, my last physics class before the break was yesterday, so I could go without science for a few weeks.
RRRRRIIIINN-
I snatched the phone up before it even finished, “what took you so long?”
Pause. “Umm… what are you talking about?”
I sighed. “Oh, hi Tracy.”
“Good to see you, too,” she said, sarcastically.
“Oh, don’t give me that. Man, Brian was supposed to call like forever ago!”
“I’m sorry. You’ll get to see him soon though, right?”
“No, he’s visiting his family for Christmas.”
“Oh, I’m sorry! Well, look on the bright side, at least we won’t have to put up with Kevin for the holidays.”
I rolled my eyes. “Your really gonna have to get over that one day. Besides, even if Brian were coming, it doesn’t mean Kevin would, too.”
“But still, I’d have to hear about him and think about him.”
“You already do think about him all the time, don’t even try to deny it.”
“Hah! Not on your life!”
I didn’t bother mentioning that last time I came to her door room to drop off her history notes and she had left the room to get something, I’d noticed that the single of “I’ll Never Break Your Heart” was in the CD player on repeat. Playing Kevin’s part, no doubt.
“Anyway, I’ve only got a minute to talk. I still have the rest of an essay to write. I just wanted to tell you that Heather wanted the three of us to spend the weekend at her Aunt’s place up by the lake this weekend, right before Christmas break. Kind of a Christmas party or something before we all go home for the holidays.”
“This weekend? Not a lot of notice… I guess. Probably. We don’t have to pay for the house or anything?”
“No, she took care of it. And her Aunt’ll be in New York visiting her son. She gave me directions, do you want a ride?”
“Why don’t we all three go together?”
“She’s got some lab to do for her physics class or something on Friday afternoon, but she told us to go ahead and leave early so we can get the keys and stuff from her aunt before she left.”
“Wait a minute…”
“Sorry, I’ve gotta go, my roommate just got home and is waiting for a call and I wasn’t supposed to be using the phone,” she whispered. “Bye.” Click.
The always unsuspecting Tracy. Heather was in the same physics class as I was, and there wasn’t any lab. She was probably just going to give Jennifer a ride and knew if Tracy and Jennifer wouldn’t go if they knew the other one was going to be there. This would be an interesting weekend.
