I was in the backseat of AJ’s second car, of which Jennifer was borrowing, with a blanket on top of me trying to look inconspicuous. She hopped in and we drove to the gas station. When we parked, I assume in the station’s parking lot, I heard her looking through her purse. I took this opportunity to look around. I peeked inside and on the other side of a few cars, I could see Brian. He was wearing a hat I didn’t know he owned and sunglasses, which was unlike him, but it was unmistakingly Brian. He was slouching over the wheel and looking inside. He hadn’t seen Jennifer yet, I guess, because he hadn’t come over yet… Jennifer closed her purse and I ducked back under. Then, I heard the car door open. She had apparently seen Brian.
I could hear them talking outside, but barely. Since the windows were all up and I had a blanket over me, the voices were muffled.
“Okay, follow me to the resturaunt. I’d say ride with me, but we don’t want anyone seeing your car.”
Brian said.
“Yeah, your right. That’s fine. Bye, sweetie,” Jennifer answered.

I waited in the parking lot, waiting for someone to get there. I saw Jennifer pull in and a minute later, Kevin. Hopefully they wouldn’t see me, since I was in Howie’s car, and was wearing sunglasses and one of AJ’s hats I found. I heard them make plans, and started to follow them, a safe distance away.

We were finally going out. The last hour had seemed like an eternity! Nick hadn’t spoken much since we’d gotten into the car. Maybe he was nervous. I hadn’t said much, either, for that exact reason.
“You fine with going to Pizza Hut or would you prefer somewhere else?” Nick finally broke the silence.
“Its fine. I know how much you love pizza!” I decided.
He smiled slowly. “You know me so well.”
We pulled into Pizza Hut and took our seats.
“So…” I began.
“Yeah.”
“What are you guys doing after this vacation ends?” I asked.
“After another single or two I think we’re gonna start recording another CD,” he responded.
“Cool.” Another silence followed. “Hey, whatever happened to our bet?”
“What bet?” he looked puzzled.
“Who could hook who up faster.”
“Well, Kevin and Tracy and Jennifer and Howie hooked up on basically the same day. So let us just say it was a tie.”
I thought about saying “No way!” But that wouldn’t take us the direction I wanted out of this conversation.
‘Alright, either I get something out of him tonight or I’m finding someone else!’ I was determined to keep my vow. “You realize Erin set us up on this, right?” Maybe that would start us into a conversation about the topic.
“Yeah,” he said, but I could tell he hadn’t seen that yet. But I also saw the realization come to his face seconds later.
“She wanted to make sure we went out by ourselves,” I continued. Nothing.
“She has this crazy idea that you like me,” we both blurted out at the same time.
We laughed nervously. “So?”
“So what?” he wondered.
“Well… is it true?”
“I guess that depends,” Nick paused.
“On what?” That was it. He didn’t like me. Man.
“Well… do you like me?”
“I asked you first,” I used the age old trick. It worked.
~Nick’s point of view~
This was my chance. We were on the topic. It was now or never. Brian had said when it was time, the words would come to me. I prayed that he was right.
“Yeah. I’m crazy about you. I tried to tell you so many times… then something always happened,” I confessed after a summer of wanting to say it.
She smiled. I waited for her to say something.
“Well?”
“Well what?”
“Don’t you have anything to say?” Oh no. She didn’t like me. She was just trying to decide how to let me down gently.
“You didn’t ask me a question,” Heather said, mysteriously.
“Do you like me?”
“I was thinking more the question of ‘will you go out with me.’ But to answer the question you asked, yes. I do. I wish we’d both told each other that a lot sooner!” she giggled.
I grinned. Well, now that I had that out of the way… “And about the bet, I won. Jen and Howie hooked up first!”
“What? No way!”
