JESUS Christ first said as written in the previous Sermon "After Jesus had said this, He became troubled in spirit and testified, 'Truly, truly, I tell you, one of you will betray Me' " (https://www.angelfire.com/ut/a2/jesusjohn13v21.html). Then as written in this Sermon from
John 13:22 "The disciples looked at one another, perplexed as to which of them He meant." (https://biblehub.com/john/13-22.htm Berean Standard Bible). The word "perplexed" fittingly means "to have no way out, i.e. Be at a loss" (ibid. Lexicon)
and it means "exiles" (https://translate.google.com/details?sl=auto&tl=en&text=%E1%BC%80%CF%80%CE%BF%CF%81%CE%BF%CF%8D%CE%BC%CE%B5%CE%BD%CE%BF%CE%B9&op=translate).
His Disciples felt as "exiles", meaning "the state of being barred from one's native country, typically for political or punitive reasons" (Oxford).
In those years many Jews were very afraid to be banished from the Temple; outcast from participating (see pertinent Sermons on them being afraid of the Pharisees per se).
John 13:22 Formula "The disciples" = "looked at one another, perplexed" x "as to which of them He meant".

This is also with another consideration, that without JESUS Christ telling them which "one", the feeling of discontent, even the wandering spirit(s) searching [as sheep lost from the Shepherd, hearing hints, noises], hence a growing discontention explaining [or contributing to] what later happened as written
