AM I WORTH MORE?

Am I worth more to the citizens of Fort Worth than the piddling $75 per council meeting that I am now paid? Many will say not only "no", but "Heck, No!" But let's be realistic. The time all council members spend on behalf of their fine city far exceeds the remuneration. It's easy to ask, "if you can't afford to give the time, why did you run?" But I guarantee you that no one can anticipate the interruptions to a tranquil lifestyle that city council service causes. Telephone calls at near all hours, numerous meetings, more events than one can attend, and just a great deal of minutia all eat away at one's day.

Everyone on the council is in favor of a pay raise but most are a little afraid to bring it up lest it arouse and irritate the voters. Sometimes though, somebody has to stand up and address inequities as they occur. And this is one. Years ago the council only met for a while on council day to approve what the manager and staff had proposed and then take off the rest of the time until next meeting. The work load has progressively increased due to the increasing growth, economic prosperity and complexities of government. Seventy-five bucks just doesn't cut it anymore.

Anyhow, I have asked the staff and council to look at increasing the pay of council members. We pay our assistants $26,000 a year for a minimum of twenty hours a week but they invariably spend more time on the job. At least mine does. I don't want to pay so much that someone would run for the money rather than the commitment to service, but it should at least cover expenses. For the retired person, such as myself, it's a losing proposition. For the employed, they may lose money the more time they spend on council activity. They should be able to break event as well. For the independently wealthy, there is not problem. But do we want to limit public service to those who don't know how the rest of society lives?

The argument here is a little over simplified, but remember the adage "you get what you pay for." And, too, don't we want our money's worth? ~ City Councilman, District 6, Clyde Picht
