Chapter 22
“No sir,” blushed Nick.
“Shoot son don’t be embarrassed. This is 2000. It’s just you two looked so in love.”
“We are,” said Nick looking at Kat.
“Are you disappointed about not being in the Keys,” inquired Kat.
“I wish we could have gone. I wanted to show you so much, but we would have only been hounded.”
“We’ll go another time,” reassured Kat.
“Yeah we will. I’m just happy being with you.”
“Now you have my curiosity up. You look familiar, but I can’t place you,” said the older man.
“I’m in a singing group sir,” replied Nick.
“That’s it! You’re on my granddaughter’s walls,” he exclaimed.
“You granddaughter likes the Backstreet Boys. Makes sense,” stated Kat.
“Um…is your granddaughter here,” said an apprehensive Nick.
“No she will be here next weekend. Now don’t worry. I won’t tell anyone you are here. I’m not about to ruin my reputation after 22 years renting cabins to people.”
“Thank you sir.”
“Think nothing of it. Is that why you are here instead of the Keys?”
“Yep. The press were tipped off and camping out at the hotel where we had reservations.”
“Well I’m sorry that happened to you two, but I’m glad you are here. Here let me give you all my numbers that way you get in a jam you can call me.”
“Thank you,” said Kat with a smile.
Nick took the information the older man gave him along with the keys to the cabin. They got back in the rental car and drove up from Gatlinburg into the mountains. Arriving at the cabin, they unload their luggage and food. The Hideaway was an accurate name for the cabin. It was tucked away on the mountain with a beautiful view. It was equipped with a full kitchen; fireplace, Jacuzzi inside and Hot tub on the corner of the discreetly enclosed back deck. Kat put their food away while Nick put the bags in the bedroom.
“You need any help,” he asked walking back downstairs to the kitchen.
“Nope. I’m…. done,” replied Kat shutting the cabinet. “Do you want anything?”
“You,” said Nick with a sly grin.
“My, my, Mr. Carter, but how bold of you,” teased Kat with a southern drawl.
“Is that bad?”
“Not at all,” said Kat as she walked to him.
“I’m glad we are here alone. I love you.”
“I love you too. What do you want to do,” asked Kat.
“Well…”hedged Nick.
“We will do that, but how about a walk before dinner.”
“OK,” said Nick, kissing Kat’s nose.
They walked out the back door and followed the trail that led into the trees. It was beautiful and so peaceful. Katrina watched the tension of being on the road ease out of Nick’s body. She watched him look at a squirrel scurrying up a tree. The sunlight sifting through the heavy foliage danced on his blond hair. His eyes sparkled with amusement at the squirrel’s antics. Her eyes wandered down his body. He had a man’s body. Gone was the little boy that adorned her sister’s room in posters.
“What are you looking at,” asked Nick.
“You.”
“Why?”
“I was just thinking how lucky I am.”
“Awww,” teased Nick.
“Let’s go back and fix dinner,” said Kat holding out her hand.
Nick took her hand and they headed back. Katrina fixed dinner with Nick’s ‘help’. Mainly he kissed her and sampled what she was cooking. They enjoyed their dinner on the deck watching the sun go down. Nick took their plates inside and loaded them in the dishwasher. He walked back to the deck and saw Kat curled up in a chair. The breeze was ruffling her hair. Her eyes were closed. Nick was always caught off guard by her beauty. His heart filled with love for this magnificent woman that was his. He never knew love felt like this, but was glad he was experiencing it. He softly called her name. She looked at him and noticed his out stretched hand. Kat took his hand and they walked inside.
Kat took one last look in the mirror. She was wearing a navy silk camisole and short set. Taking a deep breath she stepped out of the bathroom. He had lit candles on the table by the bed. Nick was sitting on the bed with the sheet draped over his legs. He looked as nervous as she felt. Nick looked up to see her standing with the bathroom light cascading over her. She turned off the light. His eyes never left her as she walked to the bed and got under the covers. They looked at each other. After a moment Kat laughed. She stopped the moment she saw Nick’s expression.
“Oh baby, I’m sorry. I need to explain something to you. When I get really nervous I laugh.”
“Really? Why are you nervous?”
“Why are you nervous,” countered Katrina.
“I’m not! OK maybe I’m a little nervous,” admitted Nick with a grin.
“This is a big step. After this our relationship will never be the same.”
“Is that a bad thing?”
“No! However it will be different.”
Nick smiled and said, “Tell ya what…”
“What?”
“Let’s just make out. Then whatever happens, happens.”
“Sounds like a plan,” laughed Kat.
Nick lay down on his back. Kat looked down at him. He reached up and caressed her face. Sliding his hand behind her head he pulled her mouth to his. He placed a gentle kiss on her lips. Kat stretched out on his body. They looked at each other. Their lips met again this time the kiss deepened. Nick felt Kat’s lips part and he explored her mouth. He pulled back. Kat caressed his face then leaned down to trace her tongue along he jaw line. She heard his sharp intake of breath when she kissed his neck. She kissed her way up to his earlobe and sucked on it. Nick moaned and kissed her exposed shoulder. Tangling his fingers in her curls he pulled her mouth back to his. His kiss was hungry. They were both breathless when the kissed ended.
Nick whispered, “Kat are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“Cause we don’t have to d…”
She interrupted him with a kiss. He watched Kat sit up. She straddled his hips. Looking down at him, Kat grasped the hem of her camisole and in one swift motion pulled it over her head. She giggled at Nick’s expression.
“I do believe I have surprised you sir,” she said in her southern drawl.
“Yep,” choked out Nick. Kat started to lean down, but Nick stopped her saying, “No. I want to look at you.”
Even in the glow of the candles Nick could see her blush. Starting at her shoulders he ran his hands down her arms then wrapped his hands around her waist. His thumbs massaged her stomach. He watched the change in her eyes, when he cupped her breasts. He sat up and captured her mouth again. Their arms instinctively wrapped around one another. Nick trailed kisses down Kat’s neck. He heard her gasp when he sucked on her collarbone. He continued to kiss her moving to her breast. Kat tangled her fingers in Nick’s hair and arched her back as she felt him take her nipple in his mouth. His tongued teased her hardening nipple before moving to the other breast. Nick lay down on the bed taking her with him. Kat’s most intimate part was pressed against Nick’s hardening shaft. Nick groaned as he felt her rock against him. He reversed their positions. Kat was on her back looking up into Nick’s blue eyes.
He separated from her long enough to remove the remainder of their clothing. He lay on his side beside Kat, tracing patterns over her breasts, then lower. Kat’s stomach contracted when he ran his finger tips around her belly button. Kat’s breathing was ragged as she felt his hand go lower still. Nick watched her arch her back when his fingers made contact with her center. As he slid his fingers inside her, she bit her lower lip to stifle her moan. Nick leaned over and kissed her. She sucked his tongue in rhythm with his fingers. Nick broke the kiss, his breathing as ragged as her. No words were needed.
Kat pulled him to her again. Restting his weight on her, he felt her hand move down between them and wrap around him. She stroked him before guiding him into her. He slowly pushed into her. He groaned as he felt her stretch to accommodate him. Once he was inside her completely he stopped. He was almost afraid to move until she brought her legs up and wrapped them around his waist. He began to move in slow measured strokes. He sped up as he felt her match him thrust for thrust. Katrina watched Nick. Each expression he made turned her on more. She tightened her legs around his waist was she felt her climax begin. Nick felt her tightening around him inside and out. It was more than he could resist. Thrusting deep into her he felt himself release. Their moans mingled like their climax. Nick collapsed on Kat. When he felt her legs relax he rolled over taking her with him. Kat pulled the sheet up over them and snuggled against Nick with her head resting on his shoulder. As their heartbeats returned to normal, Nick chuckled causing Kat to look up at him.
“Well now we know where making out leads us.”
Kat giggled, “sure do. I love you Nick.”
“I love you.”
Nick watched Kat as she drifted off to sleep. He reached over and picked up each candle, blowing it out. He hugged her closer as he fell into a contented sleep.
Chapter 23
Nick woke up thinking did last night happen? He smiled as he realized it had. The proof lay in his arms. They were as they had fallen asleep. Katrina’s head resting on his chest and her soft body against his. He tightened his arms while kissing the top of her head. He looked at the view from the window as he let her sleep. A few minutes later she stirred.
He whispered, “morning.”
“Morning. How long have you been awake?”
“Not long.”
“So are you OK about last night,” she asked, shifting to look into his eyes.
“Yes. Are you?”
“Yes.”
“Good! Now me kiss,” he said.
“Nick I have terrible morning breath,” she giggled.
“So do I, but I want a kiss,” he said, before kissing her. “See that wasn’t so bad.”
“No it wasn’t,” agreed Kat with a sly grin.
“Why do you have that look on your face?”
“Whatever do you mean sir,” she asked in a southern drawl.
“You know what I mean.”
“Well…It seems that all of you is awake,” she said.
“Oh Kitten,” Nick groaned as her hand wrapped around him.
“Yes baby,” asked Kat as she straddled his hips. “You want me to stop?”
“No.”
“Good,” she giggled.
She lowered herself onto him with a sigh. They locked eyes. She began to move on him. She ran her hands over Nick’s chest and stomach stopping to tease his nipples. He did the same. They never broke eye contact. Nick urged Kat to speed up, but she refused. She told him to just feel what was happening. He did as she requested. He felt her gripping him as he watched the sensations play out in her eyes. Finally, Kat gave in and moved faster. Nick watched her as she climaxed with her head thrown back while her back arched. The sight coupled with her contracting around him pushed him over the edge and he arched up into her. They again watched each other as they regained control of their breathing and heartbeats.
“Well Kitten I think I’m going to like that smile from now on,” mused Nick.
“I thought you might. As much as I hate to move I need to take a shower.”
“I’ll come with you.”
She said, “No. You need to call your mom. You promised to check in with her. You do that while I take a quick shower then fix breakfast.”
Nick sighed, “Fine. Get off me then. I just can’t talk to my mom while you are sitting with me still inside you.”
Kat laughed, “Good point!”
Kat got up and started to walk toward the bathroom. Nick stopped her by grabbing her hand. He pulled her to him for one last kiss. He watched her bottom sway as she walked into the bathroom. He got up and found his cell phone, dialing the familiar number.
Kat came out of the bathroom and got dressed. She softly giggled when Nick stumbled over his words as he watched her dress. Nick blushed, but recovered and continued to talk to his mom. She headed downstairs and started breakfast. While the sausage/cheese rolls baked, she set up their two-laptop computers. She heard the shower turn on. She set the table and quickly called her home.
“Hello.”
“Hi Dad.”
“Katrina! Where are you?”
“Gatlinburg, TN.”
“With Nick,” her father’s tone was very even.
“Yes with Nick. How is everyone?”
“They are fine. When are you coming home?”
“I don’t know Dad.”
“Katrina you are 24, you need to stop playing with that boy and come home. It’s time you started behaving like an adult.”
“I am an adult father. I am not playing with that boy as you referred to him. We are together and that is our business.”
“Not when you make headlines.”
“What?”
“You need to watch the E! Gossip show and maybe pick up People magazine. How do you think I felt having a colleague call me and mention how they had seen you with that boy?”
“Why does it matter to you?”
“You’re my daughter. It was humiliating to have the country assuming my daughter was shacking up with this child!”
“Father he is not a child! How dare you disrespect him that way! I don’t care what you say about me, but you will not treat the man I love this way.”
“Love! You are too young to know what love is.”
“Father dear I do believe you contradict yourself. First you say I’m too old then you say I’m to young. Make up your mind! While you’re doing that tell everyone hello and I miss them. Good-bye,” Kat spat out before hanging up the phone.
Nick watched her throw her cell phone across the room. Luckily it hit an overstuffed chair. Kat sat rocking while holding her breath. She was trying so hard not to make a sound while crying. Nick walked to her and placed his hand on her shoulder. Kat immediately tensed. She refused to look at him. She got off the couch wiping her eyes.
“So you hungry? I’m starved. Breakfast is ready. You want OJ? Take a seat. I will get the cheese and sausage rolls. I hope you like them. Mom taught me how to make them. They look like cinnamon rolls with sausage and cheese. Well duh!” Kat finally breathed.
“Kat,” Nick started.
“Leave it Nick,” interrupted Kat looking him square in the eye.
Nick sighed, but relented for the time being. Kat sat everything down. Nick took one of the rolls. He tasted it and complimented her on it. It really was good. He watched while she played with her food. They sat in silence. Nick watch Katrina shut down before his eyes. Suddenly Kat picked up the TV guide lying on the table. She thumbed through it. She found what she wanted then looked at her watch.
“Nick baby can I desert you for about 15 minutes?”
“Why?”
“I need to run to a store and get something.”
“You want me to come?”
“Nah. You finish eating. I set up your computer. It’s all ready for you. I’ll be back before you get through even one game.”
“All right, but we need to talk.”
“Fine later. I’ll be back in a few.”
Nick watched her gather her purse, keys and shoes. She gave him a quick kiss and was out the door. He decided they would talk when she got back. The second he heard her tone of voice he knew she was talking to her father. It was very obvious that her father was not pleased with her being with him. Did Dana and Lissa feel the same way? He decided to call Lissa. He pulled his sketchpad out of his backpack. He wrote important numbers on the front page of it. He dialed Lissa’s cell phone number.
“Hello?”
“Melissa?”
“Nick?”
“Yep.”
“What’s wrong? Where’s Kat?”
“Kat’s gone to the store. I’m sorry to scare you.”
“OK. Now what is wrong?”
“Well Kat called your house this morning.”
Lissa interrupted, “Oh no, Dad!”
“Yep. From what I got from this end of the conversation, he is not happy about Kat and I being together. Melissa do you and your mom feel the same way.”
“Good God Nick! No! All right, hang on. Nick here’s mom.”
Melissa handed her phone to her mother. Dana explained they were out shopping. She asked Nick to tell her everything he had heard. As Nick explained, Dana got mad.
"Nick do you love my daughter?”
“Yes.”
“Then that’s all I need to hear. I don’t have problem with you two.”
“Even though I’m five years younger?”
“I don’t care. You love her and treat her right. We will be just fine. As for my husband, let’s just say he will get an attitude adjustment before the day is over. Now where is my daughter?”
“She went to the store, but should be back any minute.”
“I will give you a chance to talk. I will call back tonight. Let me guess as to how she is acting. She refused to talk about it.”
“You know your daughter. What do I do?”
“Well she got her stubbornness from me Nick. I feel it only fair to warn you, when she’s mad she blows up just like me. However when she’s hurt she shuts down just like her father. He hurt her today. I think she’s also scared.”
“Of what?”
“You…these feelings. My oldest has always been one to guard against getting hurt. You are inside her heart now. She’s not use to that or the attention you two are getting.”
“What do you mean?”
“I take it you haven’t had a TV on or seen People.”
“No why?”
“Well you are in People kissing and E! made some speculations about who that girl is you were seen kissing and who was supposedly with you in the Keys at this very moment.”
“Oh no.”
“You said Kat went to the store?”
“Yeah.”
“I’m sure James told her about the picture in People. She is probably buying it right now.”
“So Dana what do I do?”
“Love her Nick. If you do that you will know what to do for her.”
“OK.”
“Now she can be a handful, but remember that girl loves you with everything in her. I know it. She may push so you just be strong.”
“I will be. Thanks Dana.”
“Don’t mention it. This is my daughter we are talking about. And you just leave her father to me.”
“I will. Tell Melissa bye for me.”
“I will Nick. You take care of you and Kat.”
“I will. Bye.”
Nick hung up the phone but it rang before he could put it down. He answered to find BJ on the other end. She called to tell him about The Gossip Show on E! He told he had already been warned. He also told her about the picture in People. They talked for a couple of minutes until he heard Kat unlock the cabin door. He hung up as she came in. She smiled at him but he could tell she had been crying.
“Who were you talking to?”
“BJ. She said hi.”
“OK. So what are you doing?”
“Waiting for you to get back.”
“Why?”
“Because I love you and I was worried about you.”
“Don’t worry about me, silly. I’m fine.”
“Kat have you looked at the picture yet,” he asked as he watched her lay the bag on the table. Kat’s head shot up and she asked, “How did you know?”
“I talked to your mom.”
“Mom called?”
“No I called Lissa and talked to her, because they were together.”
“What,” she yelled. “Why did you do that?”
“Damn it Katrina. You wouldn’t talk to me. I know your dad doesn’t like me. I called Lissa to find out if she and your mom feel the same way!”
“You had no right.”
Nick’s voice raised, “Yes I do! I love you. I wanted to know how to help.”
“Do me a favor Nick and don’t help anymore,” said Katrina.
“Fine!” yelled Nick. “I won’t.”
“Fine!”
Kat ran out the back door of the cabin. She kept running. She was stupid. Why did she act this way? She took everything out on Nick. He hadn’t done anything. She was mad at her father. She was also mad at herself. She hated that it spooked her to know someone had taken a picture of her without her knowledge. She felt a complete invasion of privacy, but how could she explain that to Nick? He lived with everyday. She would just sound like a baby. Her abrupt meeting with the ground interrupted her thoughts. She wasn’t paying attention to where she was going and tripped over an exposed tree root. She twisted her ankle only slightly, but that was all it took for the tears to finally come. She cried it all out. She was so hurt by her dad. He never seemed to be able to just love and support her. His love always had conditions. She cried, because she had once again pushed Nick away. How many more times would he put up with that? She cried, because she was frightened by her feelings for him. She had never let anyone in. Actually, she hadn’t realized he was in until he was already there. He seemed so at ease with everything. When she was all cried out she started limping back to the cabin, determined to make up for her behavior to Nick.
Chapter 24
Nick was still fuming when he heard the sliding doors of the cabin open. He whirled around to give Katrina a piece of his mind but stopped the second he saw her. Kat was covered in dirt her face streaked with tears and mud. His anger melted away. They stood in their spots looking at each other. Finally Kat summoned the courage to speak.
“Nick please don’t hate me. I’m sorry. You can call Mom and Melissa anytime you want. It’s my own stupidity that worried you,” she choked out around tears.
Nick held his arms open for her. They would have their talk. He knew they had some things to work out, but that could wait. Kat started toward him. It was then he realized she was limping. He moved to her instantly.
“Kat are you hurt?”
“Not really. I tripped and twisted my ankle. It’s not bad.”
“Kat I’m so sorry. I should have come after you.”
“Shhh Nick,” soothed Kat placing a finger to his lips. “You would have only been there to see me fall. I did this to myself. Don’t beat yourself up about it. I will be fine. It’s just a little sore. It will be gone by tomorrow. Right now I need a bath. I’m going to put that Jacuzzi to use. Nick! What are you doing?”
“I’m taking you upstairs.”
“Nickolas Gene Carter put me down!”
“Katrina Rene Morgan hush and enjoy the ride.”
With that Nick headed up the steps with her in his arms. He sat her on the bed, ordering her to stay. He started filling the Jacuzzi with water. He came out to her suitcase. She was surprised that he knew her well enough to know she had packed bubble bath. He then came back and picked her up. She knew it was useless to argue with him. He gently sat her on the side of the Jacuzzi. He took her shoes and socks off, kissing her ankle. He finished removing her clothes then sat her in the water. He left her to soak. He came back in a half-hour later and washed her back before getting her out and drying her off. He gave her one of his over sized jerseys to put on. Finally he carried her back downstairs to the couch. He made them sandwiches for lunch then joined her on the couch.
“Are you ready to watch this Gossip Show thing,” he asked her as they finished eating.
“I guess so.”
Nick cleared the plates then rejoined her on the couch but sat where she could stretch out against him with an ice pack on her ankle and his arm around her. They turned on the TV and found the E! channel. Sure enough just like her father said, they were speculating about who she was and what kind of relationship they had. Nick had also brought back with him the People magazine. He had laid it in Kat’s lap. She ignored it until the show was over. Her curiosity got the better of her and she flipped through the pages. She didn’t have to go very far. It was in the front section of the magazine that was dedicated to who was seen where with whom. It was actually three pictures. The middle one was of them kissing for the whole world to see. It had been taken outside the AMA’s. Nick had pulled her to him just before they got in the limo and kissed her. She shouldn’t have been surprised that someone got the pictures. The caption read – ‘Has the youngest Backstreet Boy found love?’
“Personally I like the pictures,” said Nick.
“Why?”
“They show us as we are…in love.”
Kat looked at the pictures again. Nick was right the pictures did show their love for one another. The first one was taken just as he pulled her to him. He had that devilish grin and she was laughing. They were happy to be together. The second pictured showed them kissing. It was not grotesque PDA, but just a sweet kiss. The last picture is what made the caption real. In that picture they had just pulled way from each other’s lips. They had that soft dreamy look of contentment. It was clear they were in love. Kat turned and kissed Nick. She surprised both of them with the intensity.
As much as Nick was enjoying the kiss he stopped it, because they needed to talk. And talk they did, about everything. Nick listened to Kat explain what was going on in her head about her father. Nick explained why he spoke with her mom. They talked about what they were going to do now that the paparazzi had outed the relationship. A great deal was ironed out on that couch that afternoon, then they played a computer game.
“I suck at this,” pouted Kat.
“Maybe, but you are improving,” said Nick.
“Well at least you won’t have to worry about me beating you anytime soon.”
“Very true.”
“I’m going to fix dinner. You know what we have. What do you want,” asked Kat
“I want you to sit down and I’m going to cook.”
“Nick Carter…cook?”
“I can…sorta. Fine I’ll order us a pizza. I saw a flyer on the TV.”
“Good plan. I will do some work on Dad’s web page.”
“Sounds good to me.”
Kat worked on updating the page for her Dad’s firm. She then saw a Blue Jay on the railing of the deck. He was fussing at a squirrel sitting on the deck itself. At her request, Nick got her camera bag. She slowly and as quietly as possible opened the sliding glass door enough to allow a clear shot of their two visitors. She sat in the floor and took pictures of them until finally the squirrel lost interest in the quarrel and walked away. Bye that time the Pizza arrived. Kat turned around and grabbed her flash. She took a picture of Nick paying the delivery guy. Nick was pulling money out of his wallet and the delivery boy was making a silly face at her. Nick paid and closed the door. Kat sat on the floor and kept taking pictures of him as he walked toward her. He stopped when he was standing over her as she lay on the floor. Her last picture was of his hand covering the lense and taking the camera away. He helped her to her feet before putting her over his shoulder and caring her wiggling and laughing to the couch. He managed all of this while balancing two large pizzas. They laughed, talked and threw pizza crust at each other. While they were having fun being together a different scene was being played out at the Morgan house.
“James may I see you in your study,” asked Dana Morgan stopping long enough to drop her shopping bags on the kitchen table.
“Dana what is this about? What’s wrong,” asked a concerned James Morgan following his wife into his study. She took a seat behind his desk forcing him to take a seat across from her.
“As you know I went shopping with Melissa today. You remember our youngest daughter?”
“Yes,” hedged her husband.
“While we were out Lissa got a call from Nick Carter.”
“Why did that boy call Lissa?”
“He wanted to know if Lissa and I had a problem with him being with Katrina. It seems you made it very clear you had a problem with it when you spoke to Katrina this morning.”
“Why that little punk! I’ll have his head for calling you. What was he trying to do? Make you take sides?”
“No dear. You are doing a fine job of that all by yourself.”
“What,” bellowed James.
“You heard me. James at first I was furious with you. Angrier than I’ve been in a long time. Let me finish! I was so angry I couldn’t come home right away. Our youngest was forced to drive me around for an hour until I calmed down enough to continue shopping, because at that point I didn’t want to come home. So we drove to Cincinnati and shopped. I thought long and hard about what to say to you. I realized on the way back that I am no longer furious. I’m disappointed.”
“I’m disappointed in Katrina too.”
“James I’m not disappointed in Katrina. I’m disappointed in you!”
“Me? Why me?”
“Because you are being so stubborn and pig headed. You are trying to break your daughter’s spirit. To force her to your will.”
“Dana I’m her father. It’s my job to protect her.”
“It’s also my job to protect her. Even if it is from her own father.” It pained Dana to see the hurt in her husband’s eyes, but she continued. “James I love you with all my heart, but you are wrong about Katrina and about Nick. Katrina is a good person. She is smart, beautiful, kind-hearted, and strong. She will be a success in life, but not in the way you want. She is making her own path. You need to stop trying to control her, because you will only succeed in driving her away.”
“But Dana do you condone her actions? She has basically run off with this kid. They are all over the press.”
“So what? I think she is doing just fine. Nick is young, but so is Kat really. He is a good guy. He has maturity in him. It took courage to call Melissa and not hang up when I got on the line. He also stands up to Katrina. You know he reminds me of you when we first met.”
“You’re joking! First of all, I am older than you my dear.”
“In years but when we met I had you beat hands down in maturity, Mr. Trekkie. I believe you told me to live long and prosper the first time we met.”
“I did?”
“Your selective memory will not get you out of this.”
“Darn it,” groused James with a sheepish grin.
“Most importantly James that young man loves our daughter. He would do anything for her. Including talking to her family.”
“I suppose you are right.”
“What?”
“You’re right.”
Dana said, “Again, what?”
James laughed and said, “for the last time YOU ARE RIGHT!”
“I love to hear those words coming from you. Now are we clear on this subject?”
He sighed, “Yes. Our daughters are allowed to live their lives. Nick isn’t a boy and he loves our daughter.”
“And….”
“I am not saying it again.”
“OK,” giggled Dana. “Now I am going to call our daughter. By the way, I love you.”
“I love you,” said James as he left the study.
Dana dialed her daughter’s cell phone number. Kat answered the phone while yelling at Nick to stop throwing crust at her. She got quiet when she heard her mother’s voice. Nick watched her as they talked. Kat was sitting on the floor with her back against the couch, her legs stretched out and her foot propped up on a pillow. She motioned for Nick to stretch out and lay his head in her lap. He did as requested and was treated to her playing with his hair as he listened to her end of the conversation. After a few minutes Kat’s mood was again light as she hung up. She leaned down and kissed Nick. He opened his eyes to see that grin he loved playing at her mouth. He carried her to bed and they made love well into the night. Finally falling asleep in each other arms.
“So are you two on your honeymoon,” asked the older gentleman behind the counter.
